Marvellous Maths and Super Science!

6th July 2023A Malone

In Maths we have been exploring money. We have sorted coins into groups, examining how they look and feel, the colour, size and shape of them. We have ordered them according to value, from 1p up to £2 in coins, and even looked at notes up to £50!

Sorting coins

In topic/science/geography, we have looked at different habitats, comparing and contrasting them to the coastal habitats we have been learning about. We then decided to make some small world habitats outdoors, including ‘Dino World’, ‘Bug Land’ and a zoo.

We have also explored floating and sinking. We used a range of materials including wood, plastic, metal and fabric, and predicted whether they would float or sink, giving reasons for our ideas. Then we tested our predictions and came to conclusions about what had happened.

This Week in Rowans

2nd July 2023A Barnes

This week in Rowans the children have explored pictures of themselves at the beach and explained what they like to do at the beach. The children have also sorted beach pictures from the past to present day. In science the children learnt all about rainbows and how they occur. The children were able to name the colours of a rainbow and then made their own rainbow. In geography the children used google maps to look at places of interest in the local area. The children had lots of fun finding our school, the nearest metro station, park and then they identified their own house.

Rainy Rockpooling

22nd June 2023Hannah Edgar

Cherries and Pines visited Marsden beach with Tides of Change to build a shelter, search for sea life and play some sand games. Even though the weather was very wet and rainy we didn’t let that deter us from finding some crabs, jellyfish, periwinkles and sea anemones in the rock pools. Discussing fossils, the danger of the cliffs, finding sea glass and digging in the sand.

A very wet, but great visit!

This Week in Acorns

16th June 2023A Malone

In Science we have been exploring the properties of materials. We tested to see which were waterproof.

We have explored and developed our outdoor learning environment.

We worked together to test if equipment was safe before using it.

We helped to set up our new outdoor Maths and Literacy shed, and our ‘Reading Circle’.

We have added some writing and artwork to our ‘On the Beach’ topic display.

This Week in Rowans

16th June 2023A Barnes

This week in Rowan’s class the children have started the new topic of On the Beach. In phonics the children have been learning all about the +th sound. In colourful semantics the children have been constructing sentences to describe action scenes. In maths some of the children have explored number bonds to 5 whilst others have practiced taking away from a number. In science we explored rain, ice and water. The children completed an experiment to observe what would happen to the ice when we placed it on a plate above a jug of hot water. The children loved watching it rain as the iced melted. In geography the children listened to the story of Somebody Swallowed Stanley which was a story about a plastic bag in the sea. The children then explored a water tuff tray to see what objects they could find and if they needed to be recycled or put in the bin.

On the Beach

8th June 2023A Malone

Our new topic is ‘On the Beach’.

We will be learning about plants and animals that live near the sea, finding out about weather around the world, investigating ways to stay safe in the water and the sun, and exploring seaside holidays past and present.

This week we have started a display to show what we already know, and we will add to it as we learn more.

This Week in Cherries

5th May 2023Hannah Edgar

This week we have continued our English work using the story Escape form Pompeii and children used iPads to research facts to complete a fact file. They found lots of artefacts that were preserved in Pompeii, including people, a dog and buildings.

In Geography they have been using map skills to locate countries on a world map, including Italy, to link to our Emperors and Empires topic.

As part of the coronation we researched King Charles’ robe and designed our own with Willows. They made crowns and flags and enjoyed coming into school wearing red, white and blue ready for the coronation party.

Volcanic Eruptions!

20th April 2023Hannah Edgar

To start our new topic of Emperors and Empires, Cherries read the story, Escape From Pompeii. In the story Mount Vesuvius erupts and this links well with the volcanoes the children constructed last half term. We first annotated the story by things we could see that linked to the Romans and the past. We then demonstrated how a volcano erupts by using water, washing up liquid, bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. The children loved watching the “lava” erupt out of their volcanoes.
