Phonics

Lexia Learning

14th July 2024A Malone

Each week we spend some time using Lexia, an online program which helps to develop reading and phonics skills. Everyone has an individual target number of minutes to complete, and we can work on this at home or at school.

I am super proud of how hard our Acorns work each week on EVERYTHING they do. They always give 100% and should all be proud of their achievements. Well done Acorns!

A busy week in Acorns!

6th May 2024A Malone

We have been learning so much and having lots of fun in Acorns!

Last week we had a visit from George the kitten, as we have been learning about taking care of pets.

In phonics we have been working hard at our reading and writing, in particular using tricky words.

In Maths, we have been learning about addition and subtraction. We explored this through songs, practical activities, online activities and in written form.

In English we read ‘Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion’. and created story maps to retell the story.

We used our new monkey bars to improve our strength, balance and co-ordination, and enjoyed working and playing together in our outdoor area.

Challenging Ourselves in Acorns

1st February 2024A Malone

This week our phrase of the week has been all about how we can challenge ourselves.

Acorns have been challenging themselves in different ways.

In our gymnastics session, we had to hang from the bars, keeping our arms straight. Then the challenge was to balance a ball on our knees without swinging! It was really tricky but everyone was super determined!

In phonics we have been reading and writing some challenging captions, including digraphs, trigraphs and tricky words. Again, everyone worked super hard!

We have also set up a self-service snack station, to develop our life skills and independence.

Well done everyone!

Our Week in Acorns

23rd November 2023A Malone

This week in Acorns we have been listening to, talking about and performing music. We explored different kinds of instruments and the sounds they make, and then played along with the beat of different songs. It was great fun!

We also began learning more digraphs in phonics, exploring words containing ‘sh’ and ‘ch’. In Maths we have been finding one more and one less using equipment to help us, such as number shapes and ten frames. We enjoyed finding one more using ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ story, and finding one less by singing ‘Five Little Men in a Flying Saucer’.

In English we have read some stories about ‘Mrs Armitage’ by Quentin Blake, which links to our Marvellous Machines topic. We have enjoyed exploring different types of vehicles and finding out how they work.
