National Fieldwork Fortnight

14th July 2024S Wilkinson

This week in Maples during geography we looked at fieldwork. Fieldwork combines the knowledge and skill children require to think about about what and where places are and why. We created a short checklist of areas within the school grounds and asked the children to locate them. The children really enjoyed sharing their knowledge and were rewarded with a play session in the soft play for their efforts. Well done Maples.

Fieldwork Fortnight

5th July 2024A Malone

This week in Acorns we have been exploring some challenges linked to ‘Fieldwork Fortnight’.

One of the challenges was to look at signs, and explore how colours signify different meanings. We talked about red for ‘stop’ and green for ‘go’, and how this helps to control traffic and keep people safe.

We even made some road signs of our own to use with the small world vehicles!

Down on the Farm

1st March 2024A Malone

This week in Acorns we have made a start on our new topic ‘Ready Steady Grow’. We will be learning about food and farming, plants and animals, and will be planting some seeds and observing how they grow.

We started to change our role-play area into a farm shop, and will continue to work on this over the next few weeks. Our first job was researching what types of things you would find in a farm shop, and we made a colourful bunting sign!

We also set up a small world farm where we can make up our own stories.

In English we read ‘The Enormous Turnip’, explored new vocabulary and then drew and labelled some root vegetables.

A Busy Week in Acorns!

9th February 2024A Malone

This week in Acorns we have been looking at and learning about maps, and creating our own. We identified positional vocabulary in the story ‘What the Ladybird Heard’, and used this to talk about our maps.

In Maths, we have been learning about pairs, and sorting odd and even numbers. We paired up animals to go onto Noah’s Ark.

An Olympic athlete, Lucy Turner, came to visit school on Monday. We all took part in a fitness challenge!

We’ve had a fabulous week!

Geography Fieldwork in Cherries

9th February 2024G Mills

As part of our Geography topic “Rocks, Relics and Rumbles” Cherries have been investigating soil by carrying out fieldwork in our school gardens.
We know there are 3 types of soil: sandy, silty and clay.
We collected soil samples around school, and in class we performed tests (rolling, squeezing and observing) to establish what type of soil we had found. We decided they were silty and clay soils.
