This week the children in Rowans attended a workshop which is based on the book Kitchen Disco. The children had lots of fun and absolutely loved the show.
Each week we spend some time using Lexia, an online program which helps to develop reading and phonics skills. Everyone has an individual target number of minutes to complete, and we can work on this at home or at school.
I am super proud of how hard our Acorns work each week on EVERYTHING they do. They always give 100% and should all be proud of their achievements. Well done Acorns!
This week in Acorns we have been exploring some challenges linked to ‘Fieldwork Fortnight’.
One of the challenges was to look at signs, and explore how colours signify different meanings. We talked about red for ‘stop’ and green for ‘go’, and how this helps to control traffic and keep people safe.
We even made some road signs of our own to use with the small world vehicles!
This week in Art the children selected colours and foam roller to make print patterns for the tentacles of their Octopuses. The children then added eyes, a mouth and tentacles to the body to create colourful octopuses. Well done Rowans
In our Maths and topic work we have been exploring maps and directions. We have described routes around school and created our own ‘treasure’ maps for our friends to follow.
Today we had a visit from Philippa, who works at the Open Zone in South Shields. She brought her Sphero robots along for us to try. We had to control them using an iPad, then steer them between cones and try to knock down skittles!
It was great fun, as well as helping our motor skills, spatial awareness and hand-eye co-ordination!
Our new topic in Acorns is ‘On the Beach’. This week we explored some seaside themed resources, and really enjoyed looking at stories about pirates, such as ‘Pirates Love Underpants’ and ‘The Pirates Next Door’.
We decided to set up a pirate ship role play area, so have been using books and online resources to find ideas for props, which we have then been making ourselves.
We can’t wait to keep adding to the area, and have had great fun playing in it so far. We even set up a ‘plank’ outside, so we can make any pirate enemies ‘walk the plank’!
This week in maths we have been exploring shape. We looked at how shapes can change in appearance when they are rotated, and identified the odd shape out from a group.
We also created tangram pictures, rotating and manipulating shapes to build the picture.
This week we studied photographs of animals very closely and then designed and made some animal masks. We worked really carefully to recreate the features of the animals.
Can you guess what we are?
We have been learning so much and having lots of fun in Acorns!
Last week we had a visit from George the kitten, as we have been learning about taking care of pets.
In phonics we have been working hard at our reading and writing, in particular using tricky words.
In Maths, we have been learning about addition and subtraction. We explored this through songs, practical activities, online activities and in written form.
In English we read ‘Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion’. and created story maps to retell the story.
We used our new monkey bars to improve our strength, balance and co-ordination, and enjoyed working and playing together in our outdoor area.
