Sphero Robots

14th June 2024A Malone

Today we had a visit from Philippa, who works at the Open Zone in South Shields. She brought her Sphero robots along for us to try. We had to control them using an iPad, then steer them between cones and try to knock down skittles!

It was great fun, as well as helping our motor skills, spatial awareness and hand-eye co-ordination!

Animal Safari!

19th April 2024A Malone

Our new topic in Acorns is Animal Safari. In this topic we will be learning about all the incredible animals that live around the world. We will explore and compare animal habitats, and investigate animals in the local environment.

We will learn how to care for pets, and find out what all animals need to grow, survive and stay happy and healthy.

Our role play area is in the process of becoming a veterinary surgery –

We’ve explored online games about how to look after animals –

We made posters about taking care of pets –

We drew pictures of our favourite animals and labelled them –

We can’t wait to find out more and become animal experts!

Keeping Safe Online

15th February 2024Mrs Spencer

This week in Willows, we have been learning and talking about Internet Safety Week. We wrote down words relating to online safety and then worked as a class to create a poem about ‘Keeping Safe Online’. We performed our poem to everyone in our whole school assembly.

Internet Safety Week

15th February 2024l Mitchinson

For Internet Safety Day Birches  thought about everything they know about keeping safe online, then used it to write acrostic poems. It is really important to be able to keep safe online, so it’s great that they’ve remembered so much.

Coding at The Word

4th February 2024Mrs Storey

Sycamores enjoyed a fantastic visit to The Word in South Shields as part of our Computing curriculum.  The children started the day with some Lego coding. They needed to use the app Spike to create a model called Hopper – following the step by step instructions to build the Lego. They then used the ipads to develop a code to instruct the robot model to move. The children were fantastic at this and showed real resilience and problem solving skills. After lunch, we explored more of The Word by visiting the Lego exhibition and also the library to read some books.  All of Sycamores were amazing and fantastic representatives for our school. Well done everyone!

Coding at The Word

2nd February 2024l Mitchinson

On Tuesday Birches and Oaks went to The Word in South Shields to complete a Lego coding activity. We had to build a model then use code to make it move. We all enjoyed building the models and were really pleased when they moved! We also explored the Lego exhibition which we loved – but everyone agreed our favourite activity was our packed lunch!

Oaks and Birches visit to the OpenZone

2nd February 2024S Graham

Oaks and Birches visited the OpenZone at the Word this week to  take part in a Lego coding activity.

We needed to build a range of different things before adding code to make them move or dance (see our video linked below). The children enjoyed experimenting with coding and adding more complex instructions, evaluating what went right…or wrong and made improvements.

Afterwards we visited the library and enjoyed the Lego exhibit currently on show.
