What is the School Council?
The school council works to make improvements to the school and the way we do things at Fellgate. We look at what things we can do better and discuss what to do. Everyone gets a chance to speak and we vote on the best ideas and then start work on changing things.
Who are the School Councillors?
Every year we run an election campaign to vote for new representatives from each class. A good representative will speak at the council meetings about things that their class are interested in. Councillors also share decisions that are made with their class or during assemblies.
Who runs the School Council?
Mr Mills runs the school council and oversees weekly meetings. School council meetings are held fortnightly on a Tuesday lunchtime.
What the School councillors have been doing this year:
Autumn Term 2023
During the autumn term, new School Councillors were elected. They have been working hard to listen to suggestions from their class members, to make school a better place.
When Hebburn Helps (a local food bank) visited school during the Harvest Festival, School Council asked questions on behalf of the rest of the children in school. We hope to do this more for future visitors because some excellent ideas responses were given to some thoughtful questions.
We continued to organise and run the school tuck shop. Using the money we raised, we have bought lots of toys for both school yards. These include: hoops, skipping ropes and other games.
For Children in Need, School Council organised a “Break the Rules Day” which raised nearly Ā£250 for charity. School Council created a list of great rules to break e.g. wear a crazy hair style or paint your nails. It was promoted across school and the day was a great success!
Spring Term 2023
School Council have continued to build our Healthy Tuck Shop, which sells a selection of snacks at playtime on Fridays. It has become a huge success and we have now raised over £200, which we hope to spend on playground equipment during the summer term.
The school council were heavily involved in the opening of our new Hub building. The children gave a tour of the mayor, local councillors and other significant people who visited our school on this special day. All our visitors commented how amazing the children were!
We continued to choose winners of our special āSchool Council Awardā which is given to children who stand out for good behaviour or an excellent attitude to their learning. It is often awarded to children who show kindness on the yard and around school.
We have been looking companies who can provide battery recycling in school because we have identified this as a concern for the environment. We have also been researching a company who provides a storage container on the school grounds to fill with old clothes – this is then sent for recycling and we receive money depending on how much is donated. Hopefully this will raise more funds to spend on school council ideas. Final decisions will be made soon and then weāll tell you more.
We organised a special day for Comic Relief where we encouraged everyone to choose their favourite Mr Men/Little Miss character and dress wearing clothes representing the colour e.g. people choosing Mr Happy wore yellow. It was a great fun day!
We also organised a cake sale which raised over £100 that Mr Mills donated to the Red Nose Day appeal.
