This week in maths we have been exploring shape. We looked at how shapes can change in appearance when they are rotated, and identified the odd shape out from a group.
We also created tangram pictures, rotating and manipulating shapes to build the picture.
We have been learning so much and having lots of fun in Acorns!
Last week we had a visit from George the kitten, as we have been learning about taking care of pets.
In phonics we have been working hard at our reading and writing, in particular using tricky words.
In Maths, we have been learning about addition and subtraction. We explored this through songs, practical activities, online activities and in written form.
In English we read ‘Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion’. and created story maps to retell the story.
We used our new monkey bars to improve our strength, balance and co-ordination, and enjoyed working and playing together in our outdoor area.
Our current maths focus is ‘To 20 and beyond!’, where we are learning about counting, building and exploring patterns of numbers beyond 10.
This week we have been investigating adding ones to groups of ten, enabling us to build numbers from 11 to 20. Everyone has worked super hard to explore, explain and discuss what they have found out. Well done Acorns!

This week in English we have been matching animals to their babies, drawing pictures and writing labels. In Maths we have explored one more and one less, and completed a number line challenge.
In our topic work we explored farms in the past, and also made observational drawings of our cress seeds.
We also had fun outdoors!
This week in phonics the children have completed tasks related to the phoneme ‘l’ and the diagraph ‘ou’. In maths the children in reception completed tasks were they had to make pairs and identify odd and even numbers whilst the children in year one complete fact family questions. Well done Rowans on a super week!!!







As part of our instructional writing in English, Cherries made pancakes this week on Shrove Tuesday.
We used our maths skills to measure the ingredients, then we developed our cookery DT skills to whisk the ingredients and cook the mixture in the pan. Finally, we ate the pancakes with sugar sprinkled or jam spread on top. We even washed the dishes!

























This week in Acorns we have been looking at and learning about maps, and creating our own. We identified positional vocabulary in the story ‘What the Ladybird Heard’, and used this to talk about our maps.
In Maths, we have been learning about pairs, and sorting odd and even numbers. We paired up animals to go onto Noah’s Ark.
An Olympic athlete, Lucy Turner, came to visit school on Monday. We all took part in a fitness challenge!

This week in maths the children in reception have continued to consolidate their understanding of numbers to 5. The children have explored the composition of numbers in pictures and have also explored conceptual subitising.


The children in year one have completed bookmark tasks. This week the children have identified number bonds to ten using bar models and a tens frame. They have also completed adding together tasks. Well done Rowans!


Year 2 have been learning to add two 2 digit numbers crossing tens. They used base 10 to make each number and exchange ten ones for one ten! Fantastic work Year 2!
