Investigating Prints for British Science Week

20th March 2023Mrs Storey

Blossoms had a great time for British Science Week investigating our fingerprints and types that we have.  We first tried taking the prints with flour but these were not very clear so we then tried graphite pencils and they were much easier to see.  Next, we used magnifying glasses to see if we could decide on our fingerprint types from arch, whorl or loop.  We discovered that our fingerprints didn’t always follow the same type even if they were from the same hand and that none of the class had identical prints.  Finally, Blossoms connected their learning with occupations that may use this technique such as Forensic Scientists.  Super investigating Blossoms!

Science Week in Acorns

14th March 2023A Malone

This week we have been carrying out scientific jobs in class as part of science week. We explored ‘connections’ by matching animal faces to make sure they made a complete face, and we made our own butter!

We investigated how the liquid cream changes into solid butter by being shaken in a jar. It was amazing as we watched and heard the cream turning into a solid!

After we made the butter we all tasted it on some bread, and agreed that it was yummy!

Connections in Cherries

14th March 2023Hannah Edgar

For British Science Week Cherries made paper cup phones to connect with each other. The children were amazed they could hear their friends across the classroom, or even in different rooms.

Plant Experiment

14th March 2023A Tod

Our science topic this half term is ‘Plants’, so the children set up their own experiment to test the different factors that affect plant growth.

As a class, we discussed the things that plants need to grow and then we decided on where we would place our plants to test our questions.

Can a plant grow with no water?

Can a plant grow with no light?

Can a plant grow with no heat?

We have been observing how are plants are growing and taking pictures of them regularly.

Fee Fi Fo Fum

13th March 2023A Barnes

This week the children have been reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. In science we listened to the story of Jasper’s Beanstalk and then planted and water our own beans. In P.E the children have continued to practice throwing a ball into a target. As part of computing the children have been practicing moving and clicking the mouse to score points on purple mash. Finally, in music the children have been learning the words to Old MacDonald.

Well done Rowans!

Ready, Steady, Grow!

8th March 2023A Malone

This week in Acorns we have been thinking about our new topic – Ready, Steady, Grow.

We will be learning about where our food comes from, finding out about farms, exploring plants and animals and how they grow and change, and hopefully doing some food preparation and tasting!

‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ by Vivian French.

We explored some of the vegetables in the story using touch, sight, smell                                  and taste.

Where does food come from?

We look forward to finding out answers to our questions and learning lots of new things!

Our Week in Acorns

17th February 2023A Malone

Exploring insects and matching to the small world minibeasts. We looked closely using magnifying glasses, and counted how many legs each creature had. We also looked at how they were similar to or different from each other.

Year 1 retold some Bible stories in RE. We read the story about Jesus feeding the five thousand, and then discussed why Jesus is so important to Christians.

Investigating length in Maths. We found objects that were short, long and of equal length, making sure we used the correct mathematical vocabulary when talking about what we had done.

Our ‘Long Ago’ topic timeline, showing how toys have changed from the 1970’s to now. Our grown-ups from home and adults in school sent in pictures and information about their favourite toys when they were children.

This Week in Rowans

17th February 2023A Barnes

This week in Rowan’s class we learnt a new sound +b. The children have practiced blending, spelling and writing words that include the sound +b. The children have also continued to consolidate their understanding of GPCs.

The children have explored the changes in the natural world including the seasons, they then  matched the season to the correct picture. During integration with Acorns class the children took turns and played lots of fun games such as; monkey business, pig goes pop and my dog has flees.

This Week in Maples!

10th February 2023S Wilkinson

We have had a very busy week in Maples. In Phonics the children have consolidated their phonics knowledge and have been confidently reading various words and phrases. In maths the children have been working hard on their individual targets, including counting, place value and adding one more. In Science we conducted an experiment to see which materials can be stretched, bent, twisted or squashed. The children thoroughly enjoyed this! It has also been children’s mental health week and the children have been looking at who is important to them and have created their own artwork showing the important people who link to them.

Have a look at the fun they had!
