We have had another busy week in Hollies. We have all completed lots of Maths and English jobs. In topic we have looked at special/important people in school and talked about their jobs. We visited Helen nurture room to ask her about her job. In Science we could identify mammals and birds, we know we are mammals because we have hair, a backbone and live on land. In computing we have been making our own e-book with our Acorn friends.

Chemistry 4 Change

8th May 2023Mrs Storey

As part of our Science work, Blossoms took part in an online workshop called Chemistry 4 Change.  They had the opportunity to speak with two real life Scientists who talked about their jobs within Chemistry and found out things like how long they’d been in their jobs for, how they trained for their jobs and what caused them to want to be Scientists.  The children then had to think about world environmental issues that can be impacted by Science and how they can be changed/prevented (for example, reducing the amount of plastic in the ocean or climate change).  Blossoms had to draw themselves as Chemists along with the environmental issue they were trying to solve.  Great work everyone!

British Science Week 2023

23rd March 2023A Tod

Willows celebrated British Science Week with lots of fun activities and experiments.

The theme this year was ‘Connections’.

For their first activity the children explored their fingerprints; using magnifying glasses to determine the pattern of their prints. Are they whorl, arch or loop?

Then the children used pencils and sticky tape to produce prints of their fingers. They were able to see the pattern of each print in much more detail.

Afterwards, the children experimented with peppery water and hand soap. This experiment showed the children the importance of handwashing to prevent germs. When they touched the water with soap on their finger, the pepper (germs) moved away from it!
