This Week in Maples!

16th June 2023S Wilkinson

This week the children have continued to practice their phonic sounds and maths targets. In Science the children have been identifying and matching the living things with the correct habitat. In PE the children have been practicing their aiming and throwing skills using a tennis ball. In DT the children have been learning about paper weaving.

A great week in school!

This Week in Hollies

16th June 2023A Hutchinson

12.06.23-16.06.23

This week we have spent lots of time outdoors and created a classroom outside and we did most of our science and history work out there. In science we built houses and then tested to see if they would hold up in the wind and rain. The paper straw house did not survive.

Recently we have been very interested in London so to move on we had a French afternoon and looked at Paris. We looked at all of the landmarks, found it on the map and even tried some French food.

This Week in Rowans

16th June 2023A Barnes

This week in Rowan’s class the children have started the new topic of On the Beach. In phonics the children have been learning all about the +th sound. In colourful semantics the children have been constructing sentences to describe action scenes. In maths some of the children have explored number bonds to 5 whilst others have practiced taking away from a number. In science we explored rain, ice and water. The children completed an experiment to observe what would happen to the ice when we placed it on a plate above a jug of hot water. The children loved watching it rain as the iced melted. In geography the children listened to the story of Somebody Swallowed Stanley which was a story about a plastic bag in the sea. The children then explored a water tuff tray to see what objects they could find and if they needed to be recycled or put in the bin.

Investigating Solubles

26th May 2023Mrs Storey

This half term in Science, we are learning all about the properties of materials.  This week, we have been investigating which materials are soluble in water.  This means that they dissolve and create a solution.  We tested six different materials and were surprised by some of our results.  For example, the tea leaves did not dissolve and we expected them too.  We discussed this and thought that maybe the water needed to be hot for this to happen.  We also found that some of our group’s sugar and water did not dissolve fully even though sugar is a solute.  We decided that this was because there wasn’t enough water for the amount of substance and showed the importance of a fair test as different groups used different amounts of water and material.  Excellent scientific enquiry Blossoms!

Parent Planting Workshop in Pines…

26th May 2023L Calder

This week some parents came into school to see our amazing science work around plants. We used stickers to decorate plant pots and then worked with our parents to add soil and sunflower seeds- we can’t wait to see who’s grows the tallest!

Before the workshop the children in Pines made and decorated some biscuits to eat with their parents- aren’t they amazing!

Pines visit to the Park…

26th May 2023L Calder

This week Pines went on a sunny walk to the park. We enjoyed playing on the equipment and balancing on the see-saw with a friend. On the way back to school we looked for flowers as part of our science work and enjoyed a picnic on the grass.

This Week in Maples

26th May 2023S Wilkinson

This week has been a very busy week in Maples class. The children have continued to learn new phonics sounds across phases 3 and 5 and apply this knowledge to read single words, write words and sentences as well as reading simple sentences. In Maths the children worked on their own individual targets including one step subtraction problems, counting and addition using counters and a tens frame. In Science the children ordered the lifecycle of a frog and could describe what happens. In History, we have been learning about King Alfred the Great and have used what we have learned to write sentences about him.

A great week of learning in Maples.

See what we have been up to!

Solar Science

25th May 2023A Tod

In science, as part of their scientific enquiry unit, the children in Willows have been making their own solar ovens.

They had to make sure that the materials they used were the most effective for making their ovens, so they had to think about what materials would reflect and absorb sunlight.

It was a brilliantly sunny afternoon so they headed out to melt their pieces of chocolate!

Sensory Bottles and Outdoor Fun!

25th May 2023A Malone

This week in Acorns we have been thinking about ways to improve our mental health. We made sensory bottles which we can use to help us feel more calm and relaxed. We added glitter, sequins, colour, beads and other things that make us feel happy. We were all very pleased with the results!

We have also been researching minibeasts to make a class information book. We had a great time outside exploring minibeast habitats.

Minibeasts!

23rd May 2023A Malone

This week we are learning all about minibeasts. We went on a minibeast hunt, built some insect dens, and did lots of other minibeast themed jobs.

We are going to make a class book to show everything we know about minibeasts!
