This week in Rowans the children have been learning about the Hindu festival of light called ‘Diwali’. The children have created colourful Rangoli patterns and also made Diya lamps made out of clay! They look amazing! Well done everyone.
In RE this week, we have started learning about the Christmas Nativity story.
We began by finding out who Mary and Joseph were and how the Angel Gabriel visited them to tell them the news that Mary would be having the son of God, Jesus.
We made small paper models of Angel Gabriel and used Mary and Joseph puppets to retell the beginning of the nativity story.
Kate from North East Humanists came to school to talk to us all about what it means to be a Humanist and the three important things humanists try to live by – Being Kind, Asking Questions and Finding Happiness.
This term, our RE topic is ‘How do Hindus worship at home and at the Mandir’?
To start off this topic, Willows learnt all about Hindu shrines. They focussed on how Hindus use them to worship in their homes as well as recognising the features and what they symbolise.
In RE we have been learning all about Holy week. We wrote sentences about the days leading up to Easter Sunday and looked at how Christians celebrate Easter.
As part of Autism Acceptance Week and the theme of colour, we went over to Willows to design yellow butterflies to be part of a whole school display. We then wrote acrostic poems using positive adjectives to describe people.
To end the Rocks, Relics and Rumbles topic we looked as tsunamis and how they are caused.
For our smelly egg competition we designed some dinosaurs and eggs and created a display with our volcanoes.
We had our final Kidsafe session and were all awarded certificates.
We had great fun this week reading more Supertato books this week so decided to create our Easter eggs for the competition based on the characters from the stories. Everyone chose their own character using symbols and created their egg- aren’t they great!
For our Easter cards we practised printing with sponges to create different effects.
In phonics we had to put together the broken Easter eggs by reading the word and matching it to the picture- we did an excellent job!
To end our money topic in maths this week we had a trip to the shop to buy a treat. All children were super stars! They could identify some coins and were able to wait in the queue to be served and hand the money over to the shop keeper. We enjoyed our treat back at school as a social snack together.
Happy Easter!
As part of their RE topic this half term, Willows have been thinking about the importance of Palm Sunday.
They have been asking and answering questions such as:
Why do Christians call Jesus a king?
Why is Palm Sunday an important day?
How do Christians celebrate Palm Sunday?
For their final lesson they made some lovely Palm Crosses.
This week in Pines we have been learning about money- we are starting to recognise coins and sort them. We have practised our fine motor skills using hamma beads to create different pictures and enjoyed making some stained glass windows in RE which we hung on our tree in class.
On Friday we enjoyed some fun in the snow!

Exploring insects and matching to the small world minibeasts. We looked closely using magnifying glasses, and counted how many legs each creature had. We also looked at how they were similar to or different from each other.

Year 1 retold some Bible stories in RE. We read the story about Jesus feeding the five thousand, and then discussed why Jesus is so important to Christians.

Investigating length in Maths. We found objects that were short, long and of equal length, making sure we used the correct mathematical vocabulary when talking about what we had done.

Our ‘Long Ago’ topic timeline, showing how toys have changed from the 1970’s to now. Our grown-ups from home and adults in school sent in pictures and information about their favourite toys when they were children.
13.02.23-17.03.23
We have had another busy week in Hollies. In DT we have used the design we made last week to start building our taxis. So far they look fab! In Science we have been tracking rainfall and looking at the different types of weather. In RE we looked at the Lost Coin parable and decorated our own coins. To celebrate Valentines day the children all made a valentines card to take home to their loved ones. We have also enjoyed PE with Adam, working on using our feet to move the ball.
