Chestnuts Visit The Hancock Museum

15th May 2023G Mills

Chestnuts have had a fantastic day at The Great North Museum (Hancock) in Newcastle.

We have learned lots about Ancient Egypt and were wowed by the real artefacts, especially the mummified bodies on display! We will follow up this learning over the next few weeks in class.

The children’s behaviour was perfect! We even received an email to school from a Metro passenger, saying how polite and well-behaved the children had been whilst travelling. All staff and children feel very proud! ☺️

Coronation Activities in Pines

11th May 2023L Calder

To celebrate the Coronation we each created a flag and a wonderful crown. We had to use our fine motor skills to cut jewels and place gems carefully around the crown. We watched videos and learnt lots about the crown jewels, we used PECS symbols to identify all the colours in the crown. We practised taking turns playing a Coronation themed ‘pairs’ game turning over 2 picture cards at a time, some of us even used our phonics to read the words on the cards. In maths we had to use our number skills to read the number on the crown and count out the correct amount of items.  We also enjoyed a very fun game of ‘pin the diamond on the crown’, there was lots of laughter watching our friends try and pin the diamond while blindfolded!

To celebrate the coronation of King Charles III Willows had some fun with their friends in Cherries, making crowns, flags and designing a robe for display.

The children enjoyed a special coronation lunch too- Buckingham bangers and Coronation roast chicken! For pudding there were some yummy biscuits and cupcakes.

Looking very regal in their crowns!

This Week in Maples!

21st April 2023S Wilkinson

The children in Maples have had a very busy first week back. In Phonics the children have been learning new sounds and trying hard to read and write words, phrases and sentences using their new knowledge. In Maths we have been using concrete and pictorial representations to add and subtract numbers as well as practicing our counting skills. We have began our history topic by looking at the terms past and present and sorting pictures accordingly and in Science the children have been ordering the stages of human growth.

Take a look at some of the hard work the children have been completing!

Our Week in Acorns

17th February 2023A Malone

Exploring insects and matching to the small world minibeasts. We looked closely using magnifying glasses, and counted how many legs each creature had. We also looked at how they were similar to or different from each other.

Year 1 retold some Bible stories in RE. We read the story about Jesus feeding the five thousand, and then discussed why Jesus is so important to Christians.

Investigating length in Maths. We found objects that were short, long and of equal length, making sure we used the correct mathematical vocabulary when talking about what we had done.

Our ‘Long Ago’ topic timeline, showing how toys have changed from the 1970’s to now. Our grown-ups from home and adults in school sent in pictures and information about their favourite toys when they were children.

First Week Back in Rowans 16/1/23

13th January 2023A Barnes

This week in Rowan’s class we started our new topic of Long Ago. This week we have been focusing on the story of the Tiger Who Came to Tea. In phonics we learnt a new sound +k, practiced writing the sound and practiced spelling and writing words with our new sound.

In history we explored the topic of Long Ago and watched a video learning about things that have happened in the past. We then looked at photos of what we had completed the previous day.

In science we have started learning about our bodies and we were able to label parts of the body on a diagram. We also explored the changes in the natural world including the seasons. We listened to the story of One Year with Kipper and then matched pictures to the correct season.

Remembrance Week in Pines

23rd November 2022L Calder

For remembrance in Pines we have been looking at the different coloured poppies and what they are for, we used our PECS to match the colour to the poppy. We each made a poppy for our poppy field in school which we placed in the ground ourselves, we also used our cutting skills to create our own poppies following a model. We even used poppies to help us with our counting and fine motor skills this week, we had to use tweezers to count the correct number of cubes onto the poppy. We enjoyed ending the week by making a poppy biscuit in cookery and taking part in the 2 minute silence- we are so proud of how excellent Pines children were during the silence!
