Today the children in Maples made some delicious cornflake cakes and then they recalled how they made them. They really impressed us with their listening and also their writing. Take a look at how well they did!
This week we have been reading ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. We researched lighthouses and found out that in the past, they were looked after by a lighthouse keeper. Now, they are controlled by computers.
We used our creative skills to build our own lighthouses!
Cherries and Willows have worked very hard building their greenhouses over the past few weeks in DT. They finished them this week by using cling film to create the walls, and left a doorway ready to put something inside. They also tested the strength of different materials and whether they were waterproof, discussing other suitable materials they could have used.
This week we invited our grown-ups into school to help us build boats. This was linked to our topic ‘On the Beach’, and also to our science work on ‘Everyday Materials’.
We designed and made the boats, ensuring that they were sturdy and waterproof. Some of us added sails to give them extra power! Then we launched them in the ‘Great Acorns Boat Race’, to check how well they floated.
Everyone had a fantastic time and the boats were amazing!
As part of our DT topic, Cut, Stitch and Join, the children have been learning how to weave using paper. The children have tried really hard to weave under and over and have shown great perseverance and determination. Well done boys!
This week, Willows and Cherries began building their mini greenhouses. Using hot glue (with adult support!) and lolly sticks, they created two squares and then added the frame ready for the roof to be put on next week.
Take a look at them so far…
This week in Rowan’s the children listened to the story of Sharing a Shell. In art the children used air dry clay to make their own shells, they look fabulous! In phonics the children have been learning all about the +ng sound. In maths the children have explored the composition of numbers from 11 to 15, composed and decomposed 2d shape in pictures and have explored making doubles with the dice pattern. In P.E the children practiced throwing the ball into a target to score points. In science and D.T the children learnt about the wind and made a kite, they had lots of fun testing the kites to see if they would fly!
This term our DT topic is ‘Chop, slice and mash!’. This week we looked at different ways to prepare fruits and vegetables and the vocabulary used. After watching a demonstration each child in Pines took turns to chop some celery, slice a cucumber, mash a banana, grate a carrot, peel an apple and tear some lettuce. Everyone did an excellent job following the instructions. The following day in literacy we recalled what we did and matched the vocabulary to our photographs.
This week in DT Hollies and Acorns made their own supermarket sandwiches. They practiced all of the skills they have learnt this year and tasted their own creations.
This week Hollies have been busy bees completing lots of English and Maths jobs. They have been looking at which animals we keep as pets and which animals live in the wild. They also made pizzas using wraps and have had fun in the sun.
This week in DT the children continued their work on strengthening structures. Their aim is to find a suitable material to build their mini greenhouses.
They compared the use of cocktail sticks to spaghetti and found that the cocktail sticks worked much better to build their structures because they did not break as easily!
