Willows joined forces with Cherries this week to create and test some 3D structures they made using spaghetti and plasticine. They found that spaghetti didn’t make the best structure… it was a bit flimsy and not very sturdy!
This is the first step in their journey to making their own miniature greenhouses for their DT topic this term.
Check in again next week to see them testing some other materials!
As part of Cherries and Willows DT topic, greenhouses, the children were building models with spaghetti and plasticine and were posed the question is spaghetti good or bad to build with and why? The children agreed spaghetti was a bad choice as it’s too weak and fragile and the models fell and broke easily. In the coming weeks we are going to focus on strengthening structures to build our final product.
This week the children have been reading the story of Handa’s Surprise. The children sequenced the story and retold the story in their own words. The children explored the seven fruits that Handa had put in her basket. The children then recorded if they liked, disliked or did not try the fruits. In art the children continued working on animal patterns and created colourful snake skins as they practiced the skills of painting and rolling.
Our latest topic for Design and Technology has been ‘Taxi!’. We have been investigating things with wheels and identifying wheels on lots of things. We looked at lots of different Taxis and watched them drive. We coloured in a picture of what we wanted our Taxi to look like and then painted our box to match our design. With help from teachers everyone added wheels to their taxi to make them move! Aren’t they amazing…
The children in Maples have had lots of fun completing Easter activities this week. They have completed some Easter maths work, made some delicious chocolate nests, made Easter cards and created their own Mr Men for our whole school Smelly Egg competition.
Today the children had a special McDonalds treat to celebrate all the hard work they have completed this term and completed an chocolate egg hunt which was left for them by the Easter bunny.
Have a look at the fun they have had!
We have been exploring ways to join materials and make our structures sturdy and strong. We planned and made some models using recyclable materials, and tested them to make sure they didn’t break or fall over.
It was quite a challenge but we didn’t give up! We worked together to help each other out, shared resources and then displayed our creations for others to see.
In DT Cherries have been constructing volcano models and this week we invited parents and carers into class to paint the volcanoes with their children. The children thought carefully about their designs and applied their extensive knowledge of volcanoes, such as saying their volcano is extinct, so painting no lava onto it. They then drew or painted designs onto rocks and showed their families some of our great resources in Cherries class. A fantastic afternoon and a huge thank you to all parents and carers for your time to come and partake in these activities with us.
