This Week in Hollies

12th May 2023A Hutchinson

08.05.23-12.05.23

We have had another busy week in Hollies. We have all completed lots of Maths and English jobs. In topic we have looked at special/important people in school and talked about their jobs. We visited Helen nurture room to ask her about her job. In Science we could identify mammals and birds, we know we are mammals because we have hair, a backbone and live on land. In computing we have been making our own e-book with our Acorn friends.

This Week in Cherries

5th May 2023Hannah Edgar

This week we have continued our English work using the story Escape form Pompeii and children used iPads to research facts to complete a fact file. They found lots of artefacts that were preserved in Pompeii, including people, a dog and buildings.

In Geography they have been using map skills to locate countries on a world map, including Italy, to link to our Emperors and Empires topic.

As part of the coronation we researched King Charles’ robe and designed our own with Willows. They made crowns and flags and enjoyed coming into school wearing red, white and blue ready for the coronation party.

World Maths Day in Acorns

23rd March 2023A Malone

Today we did lots of activities for World Maths Day. In English we looked at some counting and number stories, then made our own number books.

In Maths, we explored money and set up a class shop, writing our own price tags and then buying things with real money.

In Art we found out about the artist Paul Klee, who created abstract art using colour and shape. We then made our own ‘Castle and Sun’ art work.

We also played the game ‘Toyshop Money’ on TopMarks Maths on the iPads. We had a great day and really enjoyed linking maths to all areas of the curriculum.

Fee Fi Fo Fum

13th March 2023A Barnes

This week the children have been reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. In science we listened to the story of Jasper’s Beanstalk and then planted and water our own beans. In P.E the children have continued to practice throwing a ball into a target. As part of computing the children have been practicing moving and clicking the mouse to score points on purple mash. Finally, in music the children have been learning the words to Old MacDonald.

Well done Rowans!

Computing with Hollies and Acorns

10th March 2023A Hutchinson

This half term Hollies and Acorns are looking at the topic Maze Explorers. They have used a variety of technology to create algorithms including the BeeBots, Purple Mash and the iPads. This week they helped design a simple track and tried using the arrows to explore which direction the BeeBots needed to go. They also completed a number of Maze Explorer tasks using Purple Mash. We found the second maze a little tricky but we got there in the end!

Internet Safety Day

13th February 2023Mrs Storey

In Blossoms, we discussed lots about how to stay safe online.  We designed posters that suggested ways of staying safe online as well as things we would like to see available.  This work also tied in with what we have been learning about in Computing this half term as part of our online safety topic.

Safer Internet Day and more…..

7th February 2023A Malone

We have been finding out how to stay safe online. We read the story ‘Hanni and the Magic Window’ and discussed what we could do if we saw something online or elsewhere that made us feel upset or worried. Then we drew things that we would like to see if we had our own magic window.

In English we read the story ‘Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge’ by Mem Fox. This is a lovely story about a little boy who helps an elderly lady to find her lost memories. We then shared some of our own favourite memories with the class.

Our grown ups have been helping us with our topic work. We gave them a task of telling us about their favourite toys when they were children. We are going to put this information onto a timeline to show how toys have changed over time.

Internet Safety in Birches

6th February 2023l Mitchinson

We have been talking this week about how to keep safe on the internet. Some of us discussed how old we should be before doing certain things online. The boys were very thoughtful with their answers and listened well to each others opinions. Others talked about how they would get help if they saw something they didn’t like online. We all know that we should speak to a trusted adult if we see something that makes us uncomfortable.

Internet Safety Day

6th February 2023A Tod

The children in Willows took part in lots of activities surrounding Internet Safety Day on 7th February.

They played a ‘this or that’ game, where they had to choose between choices like; Games or Videos? Meet a famous YouTuber or be a famous YouTuber? The children were able to make their choices and then justify why they had chosen them.

Next up, they created lovely posters stating some of the things that they liked doing online as well as some of the changes that they would like to see in the online world. After this they then put their written words into spoken ones and made short videos voicing their thoughts about the internet and being online.

Finally, the children took part in a timeline activity where they had to place different technological milestones at the age at which they thought someone would first do it; such as, ‘have a video chat with a friend’ or ‘play on a games console’.
