Our Week in Acorns

23rd November 2023A Malone

This week in Acorns we have been listening to, talking about and performing music. We explored different kinds of instruments and the sounds they make, and then played along with the beat of different songs. It was great fun!

We also began learning more digraphs in phonics, exploring words containing ‘sh’ and ‘ch’. In Maths we have been finding one more and one less using equipment to help us, such as number shapes and ten frames. We enjoyed finding one more using ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ story, and finding one less by singing ‘Five Little Men in a Flying Saucer’.

In English we have read some stories about ‘Mrs Armitage’ by Quentin Blake, which links to our Marvellous Machines topic. We have enjoyed exploring different types of vehicles and finding out how they work.

Time in French

16th November 2023Mrs Storey

As part of our French lessons, Sycamores have been learning how to tell the time.  We first recapped the times in English using small clocks before discussing the language for hour in French.  The children became more and more confident in speaking the time in French before we began to write the time in sentences.  Great work Sycamores!

Acorns Shop

14th November 2023A Malone

This week in Mathematics we are exploring the numbers 4 and 5, looking for them in the environment and representing them in different ways.

We decided to set up a shop and used 1p coins to make different amounts. We sorted all of the items we wanted to sell. talking about why they belonged in each section of the shop, then we made price labels for the items. Some items were more than 5p, so we carefully counted out the right number of coins to make each amount.

We’ve even started to create a cafe within our shop, so customers can have a drink and snack when they finish their shopping!

Our Week in Rowans

11th November 2023A Barnes

This week in maths the children in reception have been learning all about the composition of numbers to 3. The children in year one have continued to consolidate comparing numbers using greater than, less than and equal to. In phonics the children in reception learnt all about the +d sound whilst they children in year one learnt about the +oo sound. In computing the children practiced logging into their purple mash accounts and selected activities. In science the children learnt about mechanisms and created their own peg car using wheels and axles. In history the children learnt about Remembrance Sunday and created their own poppies using paints.

Well done Rowans!

Our Week in Acorns

25th October 2023A Malone

We finished off our work on the Three Little Pigs by designing and making their houses.

We did some fabulous writing in phonics, saying the words and writing down the letters.

In Maths we rolled dice and said the number, then counted out objects to match.

We also practised using ten frames to represent numbers.

This Week in Rowans

22nd October 2023A Barnes

A fantastic week in Rowans! In Maths, the children in reception have explored the composition of numbers to 3 whilst the children in year one have compared groups by matching and also explored fewer, more and the same. In Phonics, the reception children have learnt the phoneme +n and practiced blending CVC words. The children in year one have learnt the diagraph +ai and practiced reading and writing words.

In Science and Art, the children have explored space and learnt all about the planets. The children had to follow instructions to each colour one of the planets using makers and filter paper, they then used a spray bottle to make the colour run to make beautiful planets. Well done everyone!

1, 2, 3!

18th October 2023A Malone

This week in Acorns our Maths work has been all about the numbers 1, 2 and 3. We have been looking for the numerals in the environment, and making representations of the numbers in different ways.

We have read stories linked to groups of three, including The Three Little Pigs and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We made story maps to retell the stories, and designed some strong and sturdy bridges!

Next we are looking forward to building houses for the Three Little Pigs!

Learning Whilst Having Fun!

13th October 2023Stacey Thompson

In Maples we are always trying to find ways in which the children can learn through play and satisfy their sensory need. This week we tested our fine motor skills by transferring water from one container to another with a sponge and we took part in a sensory dig in maths searching for numbers which we used to create and answer simple sums. The children loved it and all worked so hard.

Patterns, Patterns Everywhere!

12th October 2023A Malone

This week in Mathematics, we are exploring, copying and continuing patterns.

We went on a walk around school to look for examples of patterns in the environment. There were lots! Then back in class we looked at some patterns and explained what we could see, before continuing them.

Finally we all had a go at creating our own patterns, explaining them to a partner.

Very impressive maths Acorns!

Big spots and small spots!

Lots of triangles!

Mrs Tones’ dress!

Red, orange, red, orange, red, orange…..

Yellow twisty pasta, purple twisty pasta, yellow twisty pasta, purple twisty pasta…..

Cone, conker, cone, conker…..

We can’t wait to see what other patterns we can spot this week!

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

12th October 2023A Malone

This week in Acorns we have been reading the traditional story ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. In Literacy we listened to the story and then retold it in our own words, using vocabulary we had learned and also words we thought of ourselves – ‘the terrifying Troll’, ‘the worried Billy Goat’ and ‘the tasty green grass’.

We linked this to our work in Mathematics about size; we talked about the different sizes of the goats in the story and put pictures in size order.

As part of our Science work we carried out a creative challenge to build a bridge that was strong and sturdy enough for a toy to balance on. There were some fantastic problem solving and teamwork skills involved!

Outside we imagined that we had to build a route across the outdoor area to protect us from the Troll! We worked together safely to carry and move equipment, and develop a solid track from the beginning to the end.

Super duper work Acorns!
