World Maths Day

23rd March 2023A Barnes

The focus for the Maths lesson was on money to show how Maths can be used in the real world. The children had to count the amount of 1p coins needed to buy toys. The children also had to sort money into two groups. For Maths in Art we created art in the style of Paul Klee. The children selected 2d shapes to create a city skyline.

Our Week in Acorns

17th February 2023A Malone

Exploring insects and matching to the small world minibeasts. We looked closely using magnifying glasses, and counted how many legs each creature had. We also looked at how they were similar to or different from each other.

Year 1 retold some Bible stories in RE. We read the story about Jesus feeding the five thousand, and then discussed why Jesus is so important to Christians.

Investigating length in Maths. We found objects that were short, long and of equal length, making sure we used the correct mathematical vocabulary when talking about what we had done.

Our ‘Long Ago’ topic timeline, showing how toys have changed from the 1970’s to now. Our grown-ups from home and adults in school sent in pictures and information about their favourite toys when they were children.

This Week in Maples!

10th February 2023S Wilkinson

We have had a very busy week in Maples. In Phonics the children have consolidated their phonics knowledge and have been confidently reading various words and phrases. In maths the children have been working hard on their individual targets, including counting, place value and adding one more. In Science we conducted an experiment to see which materials can be stretched, bent, twisted or squashed. The children thoroughly enjoyed this! It has also been children’s mental health week and the children have been looking at who is important to them and have created their own artwork showing the important people who link to them.

Have a look at the fun they had!

This Week in Hollies

27th January 2023A Hutchinson

23.01.23-27.01.23

The children in Hollies have had a very busy week! In Phonics we have continued to learn new phonemes/graphemes and have used them in a variety of ways. In maths we have been looking at 2D shapes, 3D shapes and directional language. Some of us have even been learning to tell the time. In Science we continued to look at the seasons, focusing on Winter. We were able to say what clothes we would wear in the winter and what we would wear in the summer. In DT we used construction materials to build our own moving vehicles. In Art we explored textures with Acorns and could describe the different textures. In Geography we looked at physical features of the UK. We have also had two lovely PE lessons with Adam, a couple of visits to the sensory room, made our own tunes during music. and sorted things into categories during Computing.

Chinese New Year in Pines

22nd January 2023L Calder

This week we have been learning about Chinese New Year. We all listened well to the story and worked as a class to order the animals in the order they won the race. We all enjoyed tasting Chinese food and were great at using our communication skills to say if we ‘liked’ or ‘disliked’ the foods. We have also enjoyed watching dragon dances and had great fun using chopsticks!

In maths we have been learning about ‘heavy’ and ‘light’, we used symbols to label the balance scales. In DT we have enjoyed investigating wheels and found that lots of the toys we play with every day have wheels on them!

Lots of great investigation work in Pines this week!

First Week Back in Rowans 16/1/23

This week in Rowan’s class we started our new topic of Long Ago. This week we have been focusing on the story of the Tiger Who Came to Tea. In phonics we learnt a new sound +k, practiced writing the sound and practiced spelling and writing words with our new sound.

In history we explored the topic of Long Ago and watched a video learning about things that have happened in the past. We then looked at photos of what we had completed the previous day.

In science we have started learning about our bodies and we were able to label parts of the body on a diagram. We also explored the changes in the natural world including the seasons. We listened to the story of One Year with Kipper and then matched pictures to the correct season.

Brilliant Buddies and Marvellous Maths

30th November 2022A Malone

Every Friday afternoon, Acorns meet up with their buddies in Sycamores and Oaks, for a session of shared reading and singing. It’s a lovely opportunity for classes to come together and enjoy some social time. It really helps to develop social, communication and language skills, and gives the older children a sense of responsibility to look after their Acorns friends.

In Maths this week, Reception have been exploring the number 9. We discovered that it is a square number, and investigated which other numbers are square.

Year 1 have been working hard at addition and using part-whole models.
