This week our phrase of the week has been all about how we can challenge ourselves.
Acorns have been challenging themselves in different ways.
In our gymnastics session, we had to hang from the bars, keeping our arms straight. Then the challenge was to balance a ball on our knees without swinging! It was really tricky but everyone was super determined!
In phonics we have been reading and writing some challenging captions, including digraphs, trigraphs and tricky words. Again, everyone worked super hard!
We have also set up a self-service snack station, to develop our life skills and independence.
Well done everyone!
This week Chestnuts visited The Word in South Shields. We used lego essentials to build and code lego theme park rides. The children made them move, play music, light up and were great at debugging if a piece of code didn’t work. We also visited the lego exhibition and were amazed at how many pieces of lego were used to make each sculpture. Finally we visited the children’s library and enjoyed looking at different books.
Sycamores have been learning all about the conventions of play scripts. To support their understanding, they worked in groups to perform a play script using the different stage directions and character names. The children knew the parts they needed to read and used fantastic expression and actions when following the stage directions.
This week in Maples we got to attend a music performance with our friends. The children really enjoyed learning about the percussion instruments used and some even got to have a try! Back in class Maples made their own band and played instruments such as the triangle, tambourines and bells whilst singing along to a song we learned from the Charanga music scheme. We have also enjoyed our fairytale of the week Little red riding hood and have wrote some fabulous sentences and character descriptions.
On Thursday some musicians visited our school for an amazing samba and drum session. All of the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A massive thank you to Paul Westgate, one of our parents, who helped to organise this amazing event!
In Computing today we made up a dance routine by creating a sequence of instructions for others to follow. We learned that a set of instructions is called an algorithm. The children tested their algorithms before other children performed their dance.
Every Friday afternoon, Acorns class invite parents and carers to join in with a story session. The children vote for their favourite book, and then we listen to the story with our grown-ups and choose a library book to take home.
It’s a fun way to involve families in our learning, and also helps the children to develop a love of reading for pleasure.
Last week we decided to add a little bit of creativity to our session, and as we had been exploring rainbows in our topic work, we did some rainbow colouring. Everyone had a great time, and it was a lovely way to end the week.
Comments and feedback from the adults is extremely positive:
“Thank you for inviting us in, it’s lovely to see what the children are doing.”
“It’s great seeing my child comfortable in her classroom environment with her friends.”
“There’s always a great atmosphere and it’s good to be involved in things at school.”
“The children are so happy and settled, I love coming in every week.”
The children in Maples love our maths lessons. Sometimes the children learn and develop their skills through practical activities and sometimes they demonstrate their understanding through answering questions on bookmarks.
Have a look at the amazing maths work Maples have been doing!!
