Cherries had a fantastic World Book Day. We started the day by visiting Willows to share stories with each other. We then visited the book swap to all choose a new book to take home. In class we created bookmarks using collages of some of our favourite books we then created bunting with inspirational reading quotes.
The children have enjoyed World Book Day today. For some of our children they chose to dress as their favourite book characters. They have enjoyed exploring and reading new books and took part in our whole school book swap.
Have a look at how much fun they had!

Exploring insects and matching to the small world minibeasts. We looked closely using magnifying glasses, and counted how many legs each creature had. We also looked at how they were similar to or different from each other.

Year 1 retold some Bible stories in RE. We read the story about Jesus feeding the five thousand, and then discussed why Jesus is so important to Christians.

Investigating length in Maths. We found objects that were short, long and of equal length, making sure we used the correct mathematical vocabulary when talking about what we had done.

Our ‘Long Ago’ topic timeline, showing how toys have changed from the 1970’s to now. Our grown-ups from home and adults in school sent in pictures and information about their favourite toys when they were children.
We have been finding out how to stay safe online. We read the story ‘Hanni and the Magic Window’ and discussed what we could do if we saw something online or elsewhere that made us feel upset or worried. Then we drew things that we would like to see if we had our own magic window.
In English we read the story ‘Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge’ by Mem Fox. This is a lovely story about a little boy who helps an elderly lady to find her lost memories. We then shared some of our own favourite memories with the class.
Our grown ups have been helping us with our topic work. We gave them a task of telling us about their favourite toys when they were children. We are going to put this information onto a timeline to show how toys have changed over time.
In Maths we have been using the mathematical vocabulary ‘more than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equal to’ –

3 is less than 5

Equal means ‘the same’

6 is more than 2
We have also been reading ‘The Jolly Postman’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg, and finding out about what happens in a Post Office.

Exploring our new Post Office role-play area
Blossoms have enjoyed freeze framing some key scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone as part of our English. They thought about how the characters would be feeling at key moments of the text and used facial expressions and gestures to show these as they couldn’t speak during a freeze frame. We will incorporate these feelings into our informal letters next week.
Last week we had a fantastic time with our buddies. We did some Christmas crafts together and shared some stories.
Oaks love spending time with their buddies and have been setting a great example for the younger children to follow.
This week Cherries wrote some letters to Santa. Take a look at some of their fantastic writing.
The past few weeks Cherries have been reading Stone Age Boy. This week they did some great character descriptions of Om and the boy from the story. They described clothing, hair and even facial expressions to say how the character was feeling and why.
