Exploring Place Value in EYFS

19th April 2024A Malone

Our current maths focus is ‘To 20 and beyond!’, where we are learning about counting, building and exploring patterns of numbers beyond 10.

This week we have been investigating adding ones to groups of ten, enabling us to build numbers from 11 to 20. Everyone has worked super hard to explore, explain and discuss what they have found out. Well done Acorns!

“One group of ten and 7 more is 17.”

“I have got a tower of ten. I need 5 more cubes to make 15. 10 and 5 is 15.”

Animal Safari!

19th April 2024A Malone

Our new topic in Acorns is Animal Safari. In this topic we will be learning about all the incredible animals that live around the world. We will explore and compare animal habitats, and investigate animals in the local environment.

We will learn how to care for pets, and find out what all animals need to grow, survive and stay happy and healthy.

Our role play area is in the process of becoming a veterinary surgery –

We’ve explored online games about how to look after animals –

We made posters about taking care of pets –

We drew pictures of our favourite animals and labelled them –

We can’t wait to find out more and become animal experts!

Penny Pig’s Super Salad

28th March 2024A Malone

At the end of our ‘Ready, Steady Grow’ topic, we had a challenge to complete! We read the story ‘Penny Pig’s Super Salad’, and talked about the importance of eating a healthy, varied diet. Then we explored salad ingredients and identified which ones we would like to try.

Everyone helped to peel, chop and mix the vegetables and then we all created our own ‘super salad’. We also challenged ourselves to try something new, and everyone tried at least one new vegetable! Well done Acorns!

Working Hard in Acorns!

22nd March 2024A Malone

This week in English we have been matching animals to their babies, drawing pictures and writing labels. In Maths we have explored one more and one less, and completed a number line challenge.

In our topic work we explored farms in the past, and also made observational drawings of our cress seeds.

We also had fun outdoors!

Fruit Art in Acorns

15th March 2024A Malone

This week we have been learning about healthy lifestyles, and exploring what we need to do to stay healthy and strong. We discussed exercise, a balanced diet, sleep, brushing our teeth and keeping ourselves clean. Everyone agreed to try a new fruit or vegetable this week, and we have almost completed that challenge!

We also looked at some art work by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who created faces out of fruit. We looked closely at one of his paintings, and then painted our own still life baskets of fruit.

Investigating Seed Growth

7th March 2024A Malone

This week in Science, we have been exploring what a plant needs to grow.

We explored different types of seeds, talking about how they look and feel and compared sizes and shapes, then we decided to grow some cress seeds.

We planted two sets of seeds, and placed one tray in the sunlight, and the other in a dark cupboard. We will water the seeds in the sun but not the ones in the cupboard. Everyone made predictions about what will happen to each set of seeds. We’re going to observe our seeds daily and observe what happens.

Golden Eggs and Magic Beans!

7th March 2024A Malone

This week we have had a bit of a mystery in Acorns! We found some ‘magic’ beans and golden eggs around our classroom!

After some discussion and detective work, we decided that it must have something to do with the story we are reading in English, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, but we still haven’t solved the mystery of where the items came from…… How very strange!

We shared our ideas and wrote some sentences about the story, and continued looking for clues to solve the mystery!

Down on the Farm

1st March 2024A Malone

This week in Acorns we have made a start on our new topic ‘Ready Steady Grow’. We will be learning about food and farming, plants and animals, and will be planting some seeds and observing how they grow.

We started to change our role-play area into a farm shop, and will continue to work on this over the next few weeks. Our first job was researching what types of things you would find in a farm shop, and we made a colourful bunting sign!

We also set up a small world farm where we can make up our own stories.

In English we read ‘The Enormous Turnip’, explored new vocabulary and then drew and labelled some root vegetables.

Superhero Multi-Skills!

15th February 2024A Malone

Today our EYFS children took part in a Superhero themed multi-skills event at Temple Park Centre in South Shields. They were accompanied and supported by our Year 5 School Sports Leaders, and everyone had a fantastic time.

It was great fun joining in with all of the activities, including stuck in the mud, obstacle courses, and parachute games. The older children instructed, guided and supported the younger children, ensuring that everyone had a brilliant time!

Well done Team Fellgate!

Mindfulness Club is every Tuesday in Acorns classroom, and is supported by Mrs Malone and Pat.

We do a range of activities to improve and develop our mindfulness skills, including yoga, playing with playdoh and fidget toys, listening to music, mindful colouring and creating things like beaded friendship bracelets.

We chat, play and have fun, and always leave with a great sense of wellbeing!
