This week in Science, the children have been exploring what a plant needs to grow. The children learnt all about seeds and the process of germination. The children then followed instructions to plant sunflower seed and added water. Well done Rowans!

In Chestnuts this week we invited the parents in to complete a science activity with the children for science week. As our current science topic is ‘animals and their habitats’ the children chose a particular habitat and designed a diorama. On Wednesday the parents came into class to help the children make their dioramas. Everyone let their creative and scientific juices flow!
This afternoon some Birches parents were able to come to join us for a science workshop. We discussed lifecycles then all chose their own lifecycle and represented it in different ways. The boys and their parents did a great job and we had some really lovely work.
This week in English we have been matching animals to their babies, drawing pictures and writing labels. In Maths we have explored one more and one less, and completed a number line challenge.
In our topic work we explored farms in the past, and also made observational drawings of our cress seeds.
We also had fun outdoors!
This week the children listened to the story of Handa’s Surprise. The children explored the fruit first through touch by using a mystery box where the children had to describe the fruits that they could feel. The children then explored the fruits through smell and taste. The children had to record whether they liked, did not like or did not try the fruits.

This week we have been learning about healthy lifestyles, and exploring what we need to do to stay healthy and strong. We discussed exercise, a balanced diet, sleep, brushing our teeth and keeping ourselves clean. Everyone agreed to try a new fruit or vegetable this week, and we have almost completed that challenge!
We also looked at some art work by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who created faces out of fruit. We looked closely at one of his paintings, and then painted our own still life baskets of fruit.
This week in Science, we have been exploring what a plant needs to grow.
We explored different types of seeds, talking about how they look and feel and compared sizes and shapes, then we decided to grow some cress seeds.
We planted two sets of seeds, and placed one tray in the sunlight, and the other in a dark cupboard. We will water the seeds in the sun but not the ones in the cupboard. Everyone made predictions about what will happen to each set of seeds. We’re going to observe our seeds daily and observe what happens.
Maples children really enjoyed science this week, we tested different materials to find out whether they were absorbent or non-absorbent. The children quickly learnt which materials were which and were able to make their prediction before testing. Getting it right every single time!!
In Birches today we tested different materials to see which one was the most reflective. we had to make predictions first and explain our choices, then investigate to see if our prediction was correct.
In Science this half term Chestnuts have been learning about what animals, including humans, need to stay healthy. This week we’ve been learning about the importance of a balanced diet and looked at what foods would be included in a healthy lunch box. We then made our own healthy sandwiches or wraps. Delicious!
