Halloween in Cherries and Willows

10th November 2022A Hearn

On Monday Cherries and Willows joined together for some Halloween fun. We played some Halloween games, including corners, musical statues and musical bumps. The children showed excellent listening skills and great teamwork cheering and congratulating their friends.

We then completed some mindfulness colouring and pumpkin designing. There was some amazing designs including multicoloured pumpkins and pumpkins with eyelashes!

We then completed a treat hunt outside where the children showed excellent teamwork helping each other find the treats.

Making Stone Age Tools

10th October 2022A Hearn

Cherries and Willows topic this half term is Through the Ages. We have been learning all about the Stone Age, including all about their tools and weapons. We went foraging on the school field for some twigs, stones and materials then came back to class to make our tools and weapons. The children worked very hard and independently and made some amazing fishing rods, hammers and axes to name a few!

Cherries Visit to the Park and the Beach

15th July 2022H Warburton

During the Spring term Cherries learned about the beach and coastlines, we read seaside stories and learned about seaside animals.

We went on a visit to South Shields beach and the North Marine Park to see if we could see some of the animals and objects we had read about. We had lots of fun using all of the play park equipment, enjoyed our packed lunches sitting on the grass then went to the beach to dig in the sand, bury objects and collect shells.

Learning About Life Cycles

17th June 2022H Warburton

As part of our Science topic in Cherries we were learning about life cycles of animals and plants.

We had our own class caterpillars which we watched grow, turn into chrysalides and then into butterflies!

We then released the butterflies ready for them to go and lay their eggs for it all to begin again.

Cherries Summer 1

24th May 2022H Warburton

This half term Cherries started our topic of Magnificent Monarchs. We have been learning lots about the Queen. We have read lots of books about the Queen including The Queen’s Hat and The Queen’s Handbag. We have retold the stories and looked at naming and matching London landmarks from the story.

In Science we have been learning about growth, we planted sunflowers in class and have been measuring and observing their growth over the weeks.

We celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with lots of great activities, including decorated biscuits red, white and blue, joining Willows class for some games and enjoyed a picnic on the main school field.

Cherries Spring 2

4th April 2022H Warburton

This half term Cherries have continued with their Coastlines topic. In Literacy we have been reading Katie Morag books, we have retold the story and looked at characters’ feelings and explaining why they were feeling this way.

In Science we have been learning about plants and what they need to survive, we also explored some unusual plants that don’t need certain things to grow. For British Science Week we created some plant posters drawing and labelling what plants need to survive. In Maths we have been identifying coins and notes and began adding varied coins to make different amounts.

For Red Nose Day we created 6 different red noses using different media. We also created some lighthouses in DT by cutting and wrapping red and white stripes of paper, scrunching tissue paper to create the rocks and the sea and adding a tea light for the light. Some children commented they looked like The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch lighthouses and that we should connect them with string to send his packed lunch. Some great learning this half term!

Cherries Spring 1

15th February 2022H Warburton

This half term in Cherries our topic has been ‘Coastlines’. We have been reading ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’ books and the children participated in some fantastic role play to retell the story.

We made our own delicious packed lunches and some of us were brave enough to taste mustard!

In Geography we have been exploring maps and globes and labelled the countries of the UK and its surrounding seas and oceans.

In Science we have been learning about materials. We went on a material hunt around our classroom. We have also tested properties of materials to see if they can bend, stretch, squash or twist and if materials are waterproof.

Cherries Autumn 2

10th December 2021H Warburton

This half term Cherries topic has been To Infinity and Beyond. We have been reading the Aliens Love Underpants books and finished this half term with Aliens Love Panta Claus.

We have retold the stories, wrote descriptions about the underpants, created wanted posters to catch the aliens and matched rhyming words in Literacy.

In art we have been using paints to mix and add textures to paint underpants and in DT we made split pin astronauts. We used all of this work to create a fabulous display outside of our classroom.

In maths we have been naming 2D and 3D shapes and looking at the properties of shapes. We all went on a shape hunt around school and found lots of objects of all different shapes.

In science we have been learning about living and non-living, we are able to sort and name living and non-living things and explain what it means to be alive.

We have finished off this half term with some Christmas activities. We have decorated our class Christmas tree, drew our own Christmas jumpers on Christmas jumper day, enjoyed time with Willows at our Christmas party and had a winter warmer session toasting marshmallows.

Cherries Autumn 1

20th October 2021H Warburton

This half term in Cherries our topic has been Teeth, Claws and Dinosaurs. We have been reading the series Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs and retold the story, described the characters and identified the characters feelings and why they feel that way.

In cookery and DT we have made cookies with dinosaur foot prints in, used a dinosaur foot print cutter in cookies and made our own salt dough that we printed a dinosaur into.

In science we have described dinosaur skeletons and sorted them into different categories as well as sorting dinosaurs into different categories.

In ICT we have used the iPads to take photos, videos and even used augmented reality to put a stegosaurus in our school!

Cherries Summer 2

16th July 2021H Warburton

This half term our topic has been Parks and Playgrounds. In Literacy we have been reading Percy the Park Keeper books, ordering the story, using colourful semantics to retell the story and writing sentences about the story. We have also played lots of I spy using park pictures.

In Maths we have been identifying heavy and light objects and turned ourselves into human scales to say if an object was heavy or light.

Our sports day was a carousel of activities using skills we have been practising all year. We used hockey sticks, cricket bats, footballs and basketballs. We then cooled off afterwards with an ice lolly.

We ended our topic with a trip to Hedworthfield park, it was lovely and sunny and we had lots of fun.
