In Rowans we made pancakes this week on Shrove Tuesday. We followed instructions to add the ingredients then we whisked the ingredients together. Next we cooked the mixture in the pan and had lots of fun flipping the pancakes. Finally, we chose our topping and ate the pancakes, they were yummy!!
Today our EYFS children took part in a Superhero themed multi-skills event at Temple Park Centre in South Shields. They were accompanied and supported by our Year 5 School Sports Leaders, and everyone had a fantastic time.
It was great fun joining in with all of the activities, including stuck in the mud, obstacle courses, and parachute games. The older children instructed, guided and supported the younger children, ensuring that everyone had a brilliant time!
Well done Team Fellgate!
In music the children learnt the words and actions to Wind the Bobbin Up. The children then practiced singing in a low and high pitched voice. In computing the children worked together to program the bee bot to go to a friend. Well done everyone!
This week in Acorns we have been looking at and learning about maps, and creating our own. We identified positional vocabulary in the story ‘What the Ladybird Heard’, and used this to talk about our maps.
In Maths, we have been learning about pairs, and sorting odd and even numbers. We paired up animals to go onto Noah’s Ark.
An Olympic athlete, Lucy Turner, came to visit school on Monday. We all took part in a fitness challenge!
We’ve had a fabulous week!
This week our phrase of the week has been all about how we can challenge ourselves.
Acorns have been challenging themselves in different ways.
In our gymnastics session, we had to hang from the bars, keeping our arms straight. Then the challenge was to balance a ball on our knees without swinging! It was really tricky but everyone was super determined!
In phonics we have been reading and writing some challenging captions, including digraphs, trigraphs and tricky words. Again, everyone worked super hard!
We have also set up a self-service snack station, to develop our life skills and independence.
Well done everyone!
Every Friday afternoon, Acorns class invite parents and carers to join in with a story session. The children vote for their favourite book, and then we listen to the story with our grown-ups and choose a library book to take home.
It’s a fun way to involve families in our learning, and also helps the children to develop a love of reading for pleasure.
Last week we decided to add a little bit of creativity to our session, and as we had been exploring rainbows in our topic work, we did some rainbow colouring. Everyone had a great time, and it was a lovely way to end the week.
Comments and feedback from the adults is extremely positive:
“Thank you for inviting us in, it’s lovely to see what the children are doing.”
“It’s great seeing my child comfortable in her classroom environment with her friends.”
“There’s always a great atmosphere and it’s good to be involved in things at school.”
“The children are so happy and settled, I love coming in every week.”
In Maths we have been learning all about ‘zero’. We have explored groups, saying which show zero and which don’t. We also investigated the composition of numbers up to 5, and created representations of numbers.

Playing a subitising game
This week in Acorns we have begun our new topic ‘Long Ago’. We looked at photos of ourselves as babies and talked about how we have changed. We are going to be finding out about our family history and life in the past.
We have also started to set up a new hospital/surgery role play area. We have researched the jobs of people who work in hospitals and also used our own ideas and experiences to help us to add resources to this area. It’s been lots of fun and we can’t wait to find out more.
We have been having lots of fun preparing for Christmas in Acorns class. We have made cards, calendars and decorations, as well as preparing for our Christmas performance!

We had a visit from ‘Tides of Change’, where we learned about fire safety, toasted marshmallows and made delicious s’mores. Everyone had lots of fun!
