Spring 1 Round Up!

18th February 2022A Tod

This half term Willows have been as busy and as hardworking as usual. In fact, we’ve been non-stop!

Our topic this term is Rocks, Relics and Rumbles, so we have been learning all things volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis.

The children carried out their own investigation into the properties of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

To match our explosive topic, we have been reading The Firework Maker’s Daughter in English where we have followed wannabe firework maker, Lila, on her perilous journey to Mount Merapi to meet the Fire Fiend…

In science, the children have been investigating magnets and forces; looking at how different magnets are used, magnetic fields and the different types of forces.

The children have also been busy artists this half term. They have drawn volcanoes, used printing techniques and sculpted 3D ammonites. Don’t they look fantastic!

Long Ago! in Lemons Class

18th February 2022A Barnes

In this half term project Long Ago, Lemons Class have been learning about the children’s history and how they have changed from when they were babies. We have learned about what it was like to go to school in the past and how everyday objects, such as clothes, toys and vehicles have changed. In this project we have enjoyed sharing stories from the past, such as, The Tiger Who Came For Tea, Rosie’s Hat, The Elves and the Shoemaker and One Year with Kipper. We also loved learning and exploring classical nursery rhymes.

In phonics the children have been working so hard with handwriting, identifying objects and sounding and blending CVC words. The children have made amazing progress.

The children have explored a range of books using colourful semantics. They have been fantastic at identifying symbols who+ what doing+ and what+ to retell stories.

In maths we have been working super hard at consolidating our understanding of numbers.

In science we have been identifying what materials objects are made from. Our favourite experiment was exploring toys from the past and identifying the material they were made from.

In history we had lots of fun looking back at our school books to see all of the amazing work that we have completed this term. We really enjoyed creating a visual timetable of a day from the previous week.

Well done Lemons!!!!

Bright Lights, Big City!

18th February 2022A Malone

We have had a busy half term in Acorns! Our topic is ‘Bright Lights, Big City’. and we have been finding out about the United Kingdom.

Reception have been learning about the weather and animals, and using their phonics skills to read and write words and sentences. In maths they have explored numbers up to 10, finding ways to represent the numbers in different ways as well as counting, ordering and matching.

Year 1 have been exploring adjectives, prepositions and imperative verbs, as well as writing directions and detailed character descriptions. They have also worked hard at improving their handwriting, learning new ways to join letters. In maths they have explored numbers to 50, place value and fractions.

Our topic work started with a little bit of research about the Queen. We had a royal tea party with crowns, dancing and royal snacks. We also practised our bowing and curtseying just in case we ever meet a real life member of the Royal family!

In Art we have been creating transient designs, exploring shape and lines using different types of pencils, and making collagraph prints. This linked to our work in science where we have investigated materials and their properties.

Everyone has worked super hard and had a fabulous time learning new things!

Hawthorns this Half Term!

16th February 2022Mrs Spencer

What a busy half term we have had in Hawthorns!

There has been some lovely work going on.

We have really enjoyed reading The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch in English and linked this to our Coastlines topic. The children have produced some fantastic pieces of writing such as; Souter Lighthouse leaflets and a diary from the Lighthouse Keeper. We have been trying really hard to include imperative verbs, expanded noun phrases, adjectives and conjunctions in our writing as well as remembering to read and check our work back and write using our beautiful letter-join handwriting. I have to say that you have blown mw away in English!

Science this half term has been all about living things and their habitats. We have discovered more about natural habitats and the organisms that live within them.  By studying various habitats, locally your learners we have been able to consider how the habitat maintains itself through its food chain.

Here’s some pictures of our amazing work….

Rocks, Relics and Rumbles in Blueberries!

16th February 2022l Mitchinson

Our topic this half term in Blueberries has been ‘Rocks, Relics and Rumbles’. We have investigated pebbles, learned about how they are formed and found out about the different types of rocks there are.

We made the layers of the earth using plasticine.

We made models of fossils, using pictures of them to help us decide on our design.

And we investigated soil, using our senses to describe it. We found roots, pebbles, tiny worms and even a snail shell!

Coastlines in Oranges Class

15th February 2022S Wilkinson

This half term our topic has been Coastlines.

In Literacy we have been recapping our phase 2 sounds and beginning to recognise our phase 3 sounds. The children have worked very hard blending the sounds in order to read words.

In Maths the children have been practising their counting skills and applying this to solve problems. We have introduced addition and subtraction using both concrete resources and number lines and have recorded amounts using tallies and then as numerals.

In Geography the children have been learning what a globe is and what it represents. They have investigated world maps to see what countries they can find. We looked more closely at the United Kingdom and were able to label the four nations of the UK and the three seas which surround it. We then looked at compass points and could practically move ourselves in different directions and then apply this to a simple map.

In Cookery we have been following instructions to make a variety of different cakes, biscuits and mini pizzas. The children worked hard following recipes and could explain where things are put in order for them to set (fridge) or be cooked (oven).

In Science we have been learning about everyday materials. The children have discovered that materials can be made from different things including rock, wood, metal, plastic and glass. They sorted different materials based on their properties such as hard, soft, smooth and bumpy. We also made predictions about which materials could be squeezed, twisted, could bend and stretch.

A fantastic half term of learning for our amazing Oranges!
