Animal Safari – Summer 2

26th May 2022A Barnes

In the Animal Safari project, the children in Lemons have learnt about incredible animals that live worldwide. They will learn how to care for pets and what all animals need to grow, survive and stay happy and healthy. They will explore animal features and find out how they survive in the wild. They will compare the ways that animals are similar and different.

The children have been working very hard with their handwriting practice. In phonics the children have continued to learn phase 2 and phase 3 sounds, blending sounds to read words.

In

In maths the children have been deepening their understanding of numbers and have explored lots of number bond to 5, added and subtracted groups of objects to 10 and played games together practicing recording our scores and taking turns.

For the Queen’s Jubilee we had a tea party on the field with our friends in Acorns. To celebrate the Queens Jubilee we research the decade of the 1970s and listened to the song ‘ All Kinds of Everything’ by Dana Scallon who won Eurovision in 1970. We also research games that children played on the school yard in the 1970s. To decorate the classroom we created buntings as we printed the Union Jack’s flag colour with our handprints. We also created a stained glass picture of the Queen.

World War 1 and Our Visit to ‘The Word’

26th May 2022L Calder

This term our topic in Plums is ‘Britain at War’ and this half term we have been learning all about World War 1. We have learnt lots of History and started our topic off by researching all of the wars throughout the years and organising them by date…

We since then focused on WW1 and learnt lots about how the war started, what life was like in the trenches, the weaponry that was used, key events, the impact on citizens and how the war ended. We created propaganda posters encouraging men to join the army or navy. We also wrote some excellent letters putting ourselves in the position of a soldier in the trenches to be sent to a member of our family at home, everyone was excellent at visualising what it would be like.

In maths this half term we have been focusing on fractions and statistics including creating different graphs, charts and tables. We created giant Venn and Carrol diagram on the floor of the classroom..

We also had an exciting visit to The Open Zone at The Word to practise our computing skills with Oaks. We designed and created a keyring which was printed on the 3D printer and we built and programmed a robot to dance!

To end the half term we celebrated the Queen’s platinum jubilee, we were given the years 2000-2010 of the Queen’s life to research, we created posters to make a timeline about the key events in those years. We practised drawing portraits of the Queen, made flags, a Queen collage and listened to the music of the decade. To celebrate we had a whole school picnic which we joined Oaks for.

Oaks- The summer term so far…

26th May 2022S Graham

Although it has been a short half term, it has been an extremely busy one for Oaks.

This term we have taken our SATs tests and I have to say, I am extremely proud of each and everyone for their effort, enthusiasm and positivity. This was not just limited to the week itself, but towards their entire time in year 6. I am sure they have done themselves proud.

There were some amazing things happening in SATS week. We definitely enjoyed our SATs breakfasts each day, followed by some entertaining dancing and singing to blast the nerves away!

This term we have continued our integration with Plums in PE, art, PHSE and even for our class trip to the Openzone. At the Openzone we created our own keyring designs which were then made using a 3D printer. We also continued our fantastic work on coding by making and programming a lego robot to dance.

Towards the end of the half term we have really started to think about our transition from primary school to secondary school and this will continue so the children who leave our school are as prepared as they can be.

We also have some interesting leavers’ activities planned so watch this space!

The Platinum Jubilee at Fellgate!

26th May 2022S Wilkinson

All of the children have thoroughly enjoyed completing their Platinum Jubilee activities and celebrations.

As part of the Jubilee each class chose a decade from the 1950s- 2020s and produced work linked to their specific decade. Children looked at what life was like in their decade, what happened to not only the Queen but also the Royal Family and helped to show how life in Britain has changed over the past 70 years.

On Monday 23rd May we had our whole school Jubilee celebrations. The children could come into school wearing either red, blue or white.

The children all had their own Royal Jubilee lunch including sausages, burgers and royal muffins.

On the afternoon, the whole school came together for a Jubilee picnic. It was so lovely to see everyone having fun together.

An amazing end to our Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Summer 1 in Oranges

25th May 2022S Wilkinson

This half term has flown over and we have had lots of fun and learned lots.

In phonics the children have continued to learn their phase 2 and phase 3 sounds, blending sounds to read words and using their increasing phonetic knowledge to spell words.

In Maths we have continued developing our counting, sorting, addition and subtraction skills. We have been recorded amounts using tally marks and numerals. We have been identifying the odd one out and explaining why and have been learning to tell the time to the hour and half past.

In Science we have been learning about growth and lifecycles. We have sequenced the lifecycles of humans, frogs and butterflies.

In PHSE we have been identifying different emotions, demonstrating these emotions using our faces and beginning to discuss simple strategies we can use to help.

We have also been demonstrating our turn taking skills.

In PE we have been learning how to play a game of cricket.

In history we have been learning about the Queen and her Platinum Jubilee. Please see our ‘The Platinum Jubilee in Oranges’ for more.

A great half term of fun filled learning.

The Platinum Jubilee In Oranges

25th May 2022S Wilkinson

The children in Oranges have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the Queen and her Platinum Jubilee. We constructed sentences about the Jubilee.

As part of our history lessons we looked at what life was like during the 1950s, when she came to the throne, comparing it to life today.

We also sequenced what she did during the 1950s as a young Queen.

On Monday, the children enjoyed making crowns and flags ready for the Jubilee party on the afternoon. They had a delicious Jubilee lunch, an amazing party with our friends from Hawthorns and a whole school picnic.
