The Great Fellgate Book Swap 2023

6th March 2023S Graham

As part of our book swap celebrations we asked for children to donate any unwanted books. We hoped that we would have lots of books brought into school and that every single child could then choose a new book to take home and enjoy.

We were all blown away by the amount of books we kindly received. The children loved picking their new books and it was fantastic to see all of the happy faces throughout the day.

With the remaining books we will have a permanent book swap display in our school where children are free to take a book whenever they like. We also have used some of the books to make a brand new outdoor reading books. This will allow even more children to read at break times and lunchtimes.

Once again, thank you to everyone who donated books.

Inuit printing in Oaks

27th February 2023S Graham

In Oaks this week we finalised our Arctic animals stencils and used them to make prints. We used a variety of colours and used the same techniques as many Inuit artists.

The results look amazing!

Even More Engineering Work in Oaks.

6th February 2023S Graham

This week the children were set a challenge and given a set of criteria they needed to follow.

The challenge was to create a bridge which would span across  80cm from one table to another using the following:

50 art straws

5M of masking tape

15 sheets of paper

We first designed them using what we have been learning about bridges. Then we got into small groups and voted which design to create. The children then worked together to create their bridge. After all the bridges were created we measured how many £1 coins each bride would support.

The winning bridge held…TWENTY-SIX pound coins.

Our next step will be to evaluate our designs and look at potential improvements.

Engineering in Design and Technology

20th January 2023S Graham

Following on from our initial work on bridges and structures we carried out a range of activities which looked at how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce structures.

We enjoyed making bridges out of paper, making predictions and testing to see how many 2p coins they could support.

We evaluated our findings and looked at why some folds in paper made the bridges stronger.

Inuit Artwork

16th January 2023S Graham

We have just started our new topic: Frozen Kingdoms!

In art this week we looked at different types and styles of artwork we will be doing in the next few weeks. These pieces of art work will be inspired by Inuit art. Be sure to keep an eye out for more in the following weeks.

This week we started creating our own stencils which celebrate arctic animals. Once we created out stencils we experimented with our own unique designs. Although we are not yet finished, some are already looking incredible.

Oaks- The summer term so far…

26th May 2022S Graham

Although it has been a short half term, it has been an extremely busy one for Oaks.

This term we have taken our SATs tests and I have to say, I am extremely proud of each and everyone for their effort, enthusiasm and positivity. This was not just limited to the week itself, but towards their entire time in year 6. I am sure they have done themselves proud.

There were some amazing things happening in SATS week. We definitely enjoyed our SATs breakfasts each day, followed by some entertaining dancing and singing to blast the nerves away!

This term we have continued our integration with Plums in PE, art, PHSE and even for our class trip to the Openzone. At the Openzone we created our own keyring designs which were then made using a 3D printer. We also continued our fantastic work on coding by making and programming a lego robot to dance.

Towards the end of the half term we have really started to think about our transition from primary school to secondary school and this will continue so the children who leave our school are as prepared as they can be.

We also have some interesting leavers’ activities planned so watch this space!

Spring 2 in Oaks

27th April 2022S Graham

In Spring term 2 Oaks continued our fantastic topic: Frozen Kingdoms.

In history we learned about the great age of Arctic Exploration and were amazed when 2 days after learning about Ernest Shackleton and the survival voyage of the Endurance, his ship, which had remained under the Arctic Ocean for over 100 years are finally found! We looked at significant discoveries and evaluated the decisions made by some famous explorers and how these decisions positively or negative impacted the expeditions. We looked at different sources of information and made our own decisions and opinions on events based on facts.

As part of our Science week we looked at adaptability of Polar creatures, such as penguins and found out some incredible facts:

Did you know that Penguins bones are heavy and solid, unlike most other birds and this allows them to stay under water, similar to how a diver uses a weigh belt?

Did you know that a group of penguins is called a raft when they are in water and a waddle when they are on land?

In art we looked an Inuit artists and created our own stencils of arctic animals and even made sculptures out of bars of soap in the same way that Inuit artists use soapstone to create sculptures. In design and technology we looked the history of bridges, how they have changed, improved and developed over time before we create some of our own using masking tape and straws to hold various objects of different weights. We then evaluated our designed, made adjustments and improved our designs.

Year 6 Summer Term

6th May 2021S Graham

After a tremendous half term back in school, focusing on adjusting back into school life, we are ready to celebrate and enjoy our final term in at Fellgate Primary School. Incredibly, we will be starting our class enterprise-Oaks Jolly Lollies. Throughout the term will be doing a lot of work organising, running and promoting our enterprise to achieve our goal to raise funds towards our leavers celebrations.

Our Summer term will be all about showing what we are capable of achieving, enjoying our learning and getting prepared for life after primary school. Our topic this term is Ancient Greece. We will be learning all about this civilization, how empires rise and fall as well as comparing it with modern day Greece. Towards the end of the year we will put lots of transition activities in place to support our children even further.

At Fellgate we want Oaks to thoroughly enjoy their remaining time in year 6 and  to be ready for the challenge of secondary school and beyond.

Remembrance Day Art

26th November 2020G Mills

Sycamores (Y5) and Oaks (Y6) have produced some excellent Remembrance Day art work.

Sycamores created soldier silhouettes on painted poppy backgrounds, and Oaks used charcoal to draw some powerful images.
