Investigating Prints for British Science Week

20th March 2023Mrs Storey

Blossoms had a great time for British Science Week investigating our fingerprints and types that we have.  We first tried taking the prints with flour but these were not very clear so we then tried graphite pencils and they were much easier to see.  Next, we used magnifying glasses to see if we could decide on our fingerprint types from arch, whorl or loop.  We discovered that our fingerprints didn’t always follow the same type even if they were from the same hand and that none of the class had identical prints.  Finally, Blossoms connected their learning with occupations that may use this technique such as Forensic Scientists.  Super investigating Blossoms!

Music in Blossoms

27th February 2023Mrs Storey

This half term we have been studying the Charanga topic ‘Make you Feel my Love.’  We have learnt about the style of song and have heard other examples of ballads as well as discussing the timbre and texture of the songs.  We then learnt about the structure of the song by Adele and performed it within class.  Finally, Blossoms added some instrumental sections through the use of glockenspiels; we used two notes and ensured we counted 4 beats in a bar.

Mental Health Week

13th February 2023Mrs Storey

Blossoms have really thought this week about how we can connect to others with this year’s theme: ‘Let’s Connect.’  We came up with some great ideas such as smile at others, sing, give them a hug or ask if they are doing OK.  For our work in class, we designed paper chains and on each paper chain, we drew anything that was special to us (such as special people, interests, food) and it really showed ways that we can be connected to others.

Internet Safety Day

13th February 2023Mrs Storey

In Blossoms, we discussed lots about how to stay safe online.  We designed posters that suggested ways of staying safe online as well as things we would like to see available.  This work also tied in with what we have been learning about in Computing this half term as part of our online safety topic.

Light and Tone in Art

27th January 2023Mrs Storey

In our Art lesson this week, Blossoms have been using white chalk on black paper to create light and dark.  We used the shading techniques we had learnt to give the illusion that the paper was changing from dark to light.  It was quite tricky with the chalk compared to shading pencils but Blossoms rose to the challenge!

Sycamores’ Summer Term!

21st July 2022G Mills

This half term has been extremely busy and exciting for Sycamores!

We continued our Ancient Greek history topic by visiting the Great North Museum (Hancock) in Newcastle where we saw lots of genuine artefacts found by historians and archaeologists. Afterwards, we played in Exhibition Park and ate delicious ice creams!

As part of our history learning, we invited our parents in for a “Greek afternoon” where we tasted many different Greek foods including: feta cheese, olives and bread with oil. We even made olive leaf crowns, like the ancient Olympians would have worn if they won a race.

We also visited The Word in South Shields as part of our computing work. We programmed new games using Scratch. We learned lots and it was great fun!

In science, we carried out an experiment to test friction. We compared lots of different materials to see which allowed a weight to slide across it the easiest. We discovered that the rougher the material, the more resistance it created.

At the end of term, we filled our marble jar and as a reward we played board games and had ice cream with a choice of a wide variety of toppings.

Check out our photos below to see what we have been up to…

Jubilee Celebrations

24th May 2022G Mills

Sycamores finished the first half of the Summer term celebrating the Queen’s jubilee.

Our Queen has now been on the throne for over 70 year. What a great achievement!

In class, we have created some lovely artwork including Queen pop art, crowns and bunting/flags.

We also had a jubilee party, where we played games and had a celebration picnic on the field.

Spring 1st Half Term

6th March 2022G Mills

In Science, we carried out experiments to test how much water was absorbed by different materials, in a set period of time.

The children made predictions first and then tested their thoughts, to reach a conclusion. This also helped to develop their maths skills.

Thurston

6th March 2022G Mills

Oaks (Y6), Sycamores and Chestnuts (Y5) have been to Thurston (the South Tyneside Outdoor Activity Centre) in The Lakes.

All children (and staff) had an amazing week! They did lots of exciting things including: canoeing, tree climbing, orienteering, exploring a disused mine, walking up mountains, ghyll scrambling and much much more!
