In Music lessons we have been listening to music, sharing our thoughts and finding the beat. This will help us to create our own beat and compose our own music.
In phonics we explored the ‘ow’ sound, then read and wrote some ‘ow’ words.

In Maths we have been using the mathematical vocabulary ‘more than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equal to’ –

3 is less than 5

Equal means ‘the same’

6 is more than 2
We have also been reading ‘The Jolly Postman’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg, and finding out about what happens in a Post Office.

This week Acorns have been to visit our new sensory space. We enjoyed exploring the equipment and playing games like ‘Berry Splat’, ‘Bubble Pop’ and phonics games.
This half-term Acorns are working with Adam in PE to learn how to follow instructions, listen carefully and work together as a team.
We loved our first session today.

Player of the week
This half term in Acorns has absolutely flown by! We can’t believe that Year 1 are ready to move on to their new adventure in Year 2, whilst Reception have been helping to make our new Fellgate pupils feel welcome during their transition sessions.
Here are just a few snippets of what we have been getting up to over the last few weeks.

In DT, our topic was ‘Chop, Slice and Mash’. First we tasted some ready made sandwiches, then we shared our ideas about our own likes and dislikes. We used various kitchen tools to chop, slice, mash and grate, and then designed our ideal sandwich.
We created our sandwiches and taste-tested them, sharing them with other children in school. Then we said what we would change next time. It was so much fun!

Our half-termly parent/carer activity. We created portraits of each other.
In the last week of term we said a final goodbye to our buddies in Year 6 (Oaks), with personalised cards and ice pops. We wish them luck in their new schools!
Every day has been a new challenge and all of the class team are super proud of each and every one of our Reception and Year 1 children. We can’t wait to see what September brings!
This half-term Acorns have been as busy as ever! We have been learning about plants in Science, finding out about the Royal Family in History, writing poetry in English, and exploring multiplication, division and time in Maths.
We have also started tidying up the Acorns garden in readiness to plant some seeds and bulbs, and enjoyed our Jubilee Party!

Acorns have had another busy, fun filled half term. In Science we have explored the uses of everyday materials, and investigated magnetism. In DT we designed and made taxis, with working parts. For World Maths Day we created number posters and explored the art of Mondrian. Reception have been learning about shapes and continuing their reading and phonics. We always have lots of fun in Acorns!

We have had a busy half term in Acorns! Our topic is ‘Bright Lights, Big City’. and we have been finding out about the United Kingdom.
Reception have been learning about the weather and animals, and using their phonics skills to read and write words and sentences. In maths they have explored numbers up to 10, finding ways to represent the numbers in different ways as well as counting, ordering and matching.
Year 1 have been exploring adjectives, prepositions and imperative verbs, as well as writing directions and detailed character descriptions. They have also worked hard at improving their handwriting, learning new ways to join letters. In maths they have explored numbers to 50, place value and fractions.
Our topic work started with a little bit of research about the Queen. We had a royal tea party with crowns, dancing and royal snacks. We also practised our bowing and curtseying just in case we ever meet a real life member of the Royal family!
In Art we have been creating transient designs, exploring shape and lines using different types of pencils, and making collagraph prints. This linked to our work in science where we have investigated materials and their properties.
Everyone has worked super hard and had a fabulous time learning new things!
Well done Team Acorns!

Acorns (Reception and Year 1) have been very busy learning, working and playing this half-term. In Science we have been learning about seasonal changes, in History we looked at homes in the past, and in DT we have explored, designed, made and evaluated different types of puppets.
We have also raised awareness for Children in Need, celebrated Interfaith Week as part of our RE work, and been busy preparing for Christmas.
