Better Together

22nd July 2021A Hearn
Life is better when we share it together! The children in Apples class have built some lovely relationships with staff and peers this year. It is fantastic to see the children not only tolerating the presence of others, but actively working together with another person to achieve a goal. Whether in work or in play, Apples children are reaping the benefits of collaboration.  Their communication and social skills are constantly improving and it is wonderful to see their relationships growing and bearing fruit.

Art Attack!

21st July 2021A Hearn
We love all animals in Apples class! Our most recent project combines this with our love of art.  Check out the amazing animals we created!
The children chose which animal they wanted to re-create and searched for images of their animal online. They worked with an adult to choose appropriate materials and then constructed their animal using a variety of joining techniques.
The end result was phenomenal and the animals took pride of place in our jungle-themed Calm Room.

Soup-er Slicing Skills

21st July 2021A Hearn
The Apples children have been learning about ways to keep our bodies and minds healthy, including making positive choices about what we eat.
This week’s challenge was to plan, prepare and cook a delicious soup to share with friends.  The children chose the vegetables they wanted to include, then practised their chopping and slicing skills in previous DT lessons, ready for the big day.  They then worked together to chop a range of vegetables, added a few simple spices and set their soup away to simmer.  The final result tasted fantastic and the children were pleased with their efforts. Staff were very proud of their little chefs!

Olympics!

19th July 2021L Calder

This half term our topic in Plums has been the Olympics. We have learned lots about the difference between the ancient Olympics and Modern Olympics. We really enjoyed watching the Opening ceremonies and even made our own opening ceremony! In Literacy we have enjoyed reading some Greek myths, especially Hercules. Here are some photographs of some of the exciting things we have been up to…

We made some Olympic torches and worked together to collage the Olympic rings.

We have taken part in lots of different challenges to earn 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals.

We made javelins with Blueberries and tested them to see who’s went the furthest!

We made a crown of leaves and made the Olympic rings out of lego.

We used a printing technique to re-create a famous Olympic painting by an artist called Rachel Whiteread.

We have had lots of fun and wish all the athletes luck in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics!

Portside Pirates – Summer 2

19th July 2021A Barnes

The children in Orange Group have loved reading Pirates Love Underpants.

In phonics we have been identifying letter sounds and posting the coins into the treasure box. We have also been sounding and blending lots of CVC words and sorting into treasure or trash.

In maths we have been adding two groups of objects together. We have also explored the place value of numbers and identified which numbers are bigger or smaller.

We had lots of fun programming the bee-bots to find the missing treasure.

In D.T we created our own pirate ship and tested the ship to see if it would float or sink. We had lots of fun!!!

We made it!

Blueberries have been virtually travelling to Tokyo for the Summer Olympics by logging physical activity. Today we ‘arrived’, after travelling 47349km. We logged 301 hours and 30 minutes of activity which was 111 individual sessions, 82 of which included our parents!

Super job, Blueberries (and parents!)

Castles and Dragons – Summer 2

24th June 2021A Barnes

This half term our topic has been Out of this World. For the last two weeks we have been learning about castles and dragons. The class story that we have been reading is a book called How To Catch A Dragon. In literacy the children have loved reading this book and enjoyed exploring its contents using colourful semantics.

In phonics we have been amazing! We have been sounding and blending lots of CVC words and completing rhyming strings. We have also used a variety of media to make our name using letter stampers and playdough.

In maths we have completed lots of counting and 1:1 correspondence activities. We have also explored the value of numbers to 20 using place value counters.

In history we have labelled parts of a castle and we have learned about knights. In art we have focused on using digital media to create pieces of amazing artwork of castles, dragons and knights. The children have absolutely loved learning about this topic. Well done everyone!!!!
