Chocolate Crazy in Plums Class

10th December 2021L Calder

This half term our topic has been Chocolate Crazy! We have loved reading the book Charlie and the Chocolate factory and enjoyed finding our own Golden Tickets!

As well as reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in literacy we have also been learning lots about poetry- we enjoyed watching Michael Rosen perform his famous poem ‘Chocolate Cake’, we memorised the poem ‘Remember Remember’ for Bonfire night and performed that to the class, we created sweet or chocolate style shape poems and acrostic poems.

In Science and DT we have been learning about melting and changes of state- we even made chocolate apples for Bonfire night, marshmallow Christmas wreaths and designed our own chocolate bars!

It has also been anti-bullying week and Children in Need this half term, we created some kindness word posters and looked great in our Pudsey outfits!

Cherries Autumn 2

10th December 2021H Warburton

This half term Cherries topic has been To Infinity and Beyond. We have been reading the Aliens Love Underpants books and finished this half term with Aliens Love Panta Claus.

We have retold the stories, wrote descriptions about the underpants, created wanted posters to catch the aliens and matched rhyming words in Literacy.

In art we have been using paints to mix and add textures to paint underpants and in DT we made split pin astronauts. We used all of this work to create a fabulous display outside of our classroom.

In maths we have been naming 2D and 3D shapes and looking at the properties of shapes. We all went on a shape hunt around school and found lots of objects of all different shapes.

In science we have been learning about living and non-living, we are able to sort and name living and non-living things and explain what it means to be alive.

We have finished off this half term with some Christmas activities. We have decorated our class Christmas tree, drew our own Christmas jumpers on Christmas jumper day, enjoyed time with Willows at our Christmas party and had a winter warmer session toasting marshmallows.

Movers and Shakers!

10th December 2021S Wilkinson

This half term Oranges have been learning all about different movers and shakers including explorers, activists, monarchs and artists.

Some of the significant people we have learned have included Neil Armstrong and Rosa Parks. The children enjoyed becoming explorers and finding a space suit hidden on the main school yard. They then found out more information about his life and sequenced what had happened to him. Did you know Neil Armstrong was a pilot before he became an astronaut?

Whilst learning about the activist Rosa Parks, the children discovered how just because Rosa was different, she was not treated the same and this was not fair.

The children used drama to act out what happened to Rosa on the bus when she refused to give up her seat and talked about how it made them feel.

In Literacy this half term, the children have been using both colourful semantics to help construct sentences and orally constructing sentences. They have also tried very hard to answer simple retrieval questions.

In Maths, the children have been developing their counting, addition, sorting, subtraction and shape skills.  We have even been learning how to tell the time to the hour.

This half term we have also been working very hard on learning our letter sounds and how to blend sounds to read words.

This half term the children have also been demonstrating their following instructions and taking turn skills during cookery. The children have followed recipes to make poppy biscuits, space rock cakes and chocolate sparklers.

In PE the children have been navigating around different obstacle courses which have challenged the children to travel in different ways.

A great half term of learning by our amazing Oranges!
