Sycamores – Autumn 2 2020

16th December 2020G Mills

Sycamores have had a great second half of Autumn term!

Our topic has been about the UK. We have completed lots of map work, where we have named the countries, counties and major cities across the entire UK. We have also looked at how land use has changed over time in our local area.

For Remembrance Day, we created some beautiful soldier silhouette poppy artwork.

For Children in Need, we took part in the Joe Wicks themed projects to improve our mental health.  During Anti-Bullying week, we learned how to stamp out bullying. We all wore odd socks to end the week!

On the run up to Christmas, we had lots of fun! Christmas dinner day was fantastic because the food was delicious and we all wore our Christmas jumpers!

Another busy half term in Autumn 2

15th December 2020A Tod

This half term Willows have been exploring the book George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. They have written a character description about Grandma, created their own rhyming poem, written instructions for how to make a medicine and produced a persuasive advert to sell it!

In maths they have worked really hard on mastering the column method for addition and subtraction with up to 4 digits. They have also looked at classifying quadrilaterals and triangles as well as measuring perimeter and area and exploring lines of symmetry.

Willows had their very first meeting with the school dog, Lenny. They loved it and he was so well behaved for us. A very good boy Lenny!

In DT, to link with their Ancient Egyptian History, they produced some fantastic pyramid structures. The children planned, made and evaluated their designs.

The children were very lucky to spend an afternoon on a Bug Safari! They had to hunt for all sorts of creepy crawlies that may be living within the school grounds. The children had an excellent time.

Our Science focus has been electricity, with the children learning ways in which our energy is generated to how to stay safe around electricity.

Whilst learning about electrical circuits the children set up their own in order to create a light up Christmas card!

I am really impressed with the level of hard work and commitment that the children have put into their work this half term. I can already see that they are maturing and becoming much more responsible for their own learning!

We have written our letters to Santa and posted them!

Coronavirus hasn’t stopped us from putting on our own nativity.

Or having lots of fun with friends dancing to Christmas songs!

Merry Christmas everyone!

All About Oliver!

15th December 2020l Mitchinson

This half term Blueberries have been reading books by Oliver Jeffers in literacy. We have read ‘The Way Back Home’, ‘Lost and Found’, ‘How to Catch a Star’ and ‘Up and Down’. We have done lots of great literacy work using the books to inspire us – our teachers are very impressed with our imagination! We have compared the books, looking at similarities and differences between events, setting and characters, and we have ended our topic with an author study about Oliver Jeffers himself.

A Creative Term for Apples Class

14th December 2020Iona Johnson

In Apples class we have been very busy being creative! We started off the term baking delicious biscuits and decorating them to look like our faces, linked to our topic ‘Magnificent Me!’ For Halloween we enjoyed making bats, drawing round our hands to make their wings and used apple cuttings as stamps to make pumpkin prints. We’ve had many Autumn walks exploring our school surroundings, collecting natural materials and using them to make collages. To celebrate Bonfire Night, we worked together to build our own bonfire, we had to figure out how we would keep our structure stable! We had lots of fun learning how to light a fire safely and toasting marshmallows for our s’mores biscuits. During our science lessons we made our own lava lamps and loved observing the changes in colours and the bubbles. Using tinfoil, we made man sculptures and drew around their shadows when shining a light on them!

Celebrations!

11th December 2020A Malone

What a busy half term we have had in Acorns class! We celebrated Halloween, learned about Bonfire Night, dressed up for Children in Need and learned how to build fires and stay safe.

We have also been working hard at our phonics, reading and writing, and solving number problems in maths.

There have been lots of Christmas activities going on too, including Christmas jumper day and filming our Nativity performance. We can’t wait to see what other fun is in store after Christmas!

Pyramid Structures

10th December 2020Mrs Storey

In Design Technology and to link with our History topic of Ancient Egypt, we have designed and made pyramids using art straws.  We planned our designs first by deciding how we would approach the task and thought about how we could make the structure stronger (for example bending instead of cutting straws and using double straws).  We also thought about how the pyramids could keep their shape – adding in crosses and extra straws to add strength.  Chestnuts then had the opportunity to make their designs.  They adapted the structures as they made them and showed real resilience in attaching the straws together.  We finally evaluated our designs and thought about ways we could improve them next time.
