Safer Internet Day is an event organised by the UK Safer Internet Centre, which aims to promote the safe, responsible, and positive use of Internet technology.

During this event, lots of local and national organisations come together to raise awareness about the best internet practices to protect children’s safety online. The Safer Internet Day slogan is, ‘Together for a better internet’. Topics of focus include:

  • consent
  • ownership
  • data privacy
  • cyberbullying
  • digital identity
  • social networks

The main goal of Safer Internet Day is to raise awareness and start a conversation about internet safety, particularly with young people who may not understand how to stay safe when using the internet. Unfortunately, one company alone cannot make the whole internet safe, but lots of people working together can have a big impact. The aim is to make a safer and better internet for everyone; children and adults alike!

What is the theme of Safer Internet Day 2024?

Safer Internet Day 2024 is based around the theme ‘Inspiring change? Making a difference, managing influence and navigating change online’.

Safer Internet Day is the UK’s biggest celebration of online safety. Each year we cover an online issue or theme that speaks to the things young people are seeing and experiencing online. Created in consultation with young people across the UK, this year Safer Internet Day will be focusing on change online, this includes covering:

  • Young people’s perspective on new and emerging technology
  • Using the internet to make change for the better
  • The changes young people want to see online
  • The things that can influence and change the way young people think, feel and act online and offline
  • Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the celebration sees thousands of organisations get involved to promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

How did we celebrate Safer Internet Day in school?

We started the week off with a whole school assembly discussing this years theme of ‘inspiring change’ and continuing to highlight the importance of staying safe on line.

We read this poem:

In classes we created our own internet safety poems:

Classes in KS2 also joined the BBC Teach live lesson where we learned about AI technology and how it is used in day to day life. We found this very interesting:
