Integration Fun!

16th November 2022S Wilkinson

As part of Remembrance Week, the children from Maples and Hawthorns came together to complete some DT work. Using icing sugar, red food colouring, digestive biscuits and chocolate buttons, they decorated poppy biscuits.

The children then planted their poppies into the whole school poppy garden.

Reading Club

14th October 2022A Hearn

Reading club is every Thursday after school in Acorns classroom, with Mrs Malone, Miss Henderson and Jo-Anne. We read books together, listen to stories, explore characters, play games and even do a little bit of singing and drama! It’s lots of fun and we get the chance to see our friends in other classes too.

Hawthorns Spring 2 Update!

23rd April 2022Mrs Spencer

We have had an amazing half term in Hawthorns!

We have really enjoyed  poetry, where we focussed on poetic language  #and we have also been working extremely hard to complete reading comprehension questions. Our topic this term has been all about the coastline. The children have been leaning about the physical and human features of coastal regions across the United Kingdom, including a detailed exploration of the coastal town of Whitby, in Yorkshire. Ask them how we remember the compass points!

Well done Hawthorns!

Hawthorns this Half Term!

16th February 2022Mrs Spencer

What a busy half term we have had in Hawthorns!

There has been some lovely work going on.

We have really enjoyed reading The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch in English and linked this to our Coastlines topic. The children have produced some fantastic pieces of writing such as; Souter Lighthouse leaflets and a diary from the Lighthouse Keeper. We have been trying really hard to include imperative verbs, expanded noun phrases, adjectives and conjunctions in our writing as well as remembering to read and check our work back and write using our beautiful letter-join handwriting. I have to say that you have blown mw away in English!

Science this half term has been all about living things and their habitats. We have discovered more about natural habitats and the organisms that live within them.  By studying various habitats, locally your learners we have been able to consider how the habitat maintains itself through its food chain.

Here’s some pictures of our amazing work….

Autumn Term 1 in Hawthorns

22nd October 2021Mrs Spencer

What a fabulous time we have had in Hawthorns this half term. The children have all settled back in to learning without bubbles with ease. Our topic has been all about The Great Fire of London and we have all thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the ways in which London has changed, how we live now is different and similar to how people lived in 1666 and  how the Great Fire started and spread across London. The children have been working so hard to develop their place value knowledge in maths and the writing that they have been producing during English has been fantastic!

Super Sculptures

24th May 2021Mrs Spencer

In our art lesson, we used simple shapes to make sculptures of the human form. We looked at sculptures by a sculptor called Antony Gormley and we talked  about what we thought they were made of, why they look like this, how do they make us feel and how they are similar and different to each other.

We discussed how Antony Gormley makes sculptures in the shape of humans and combines simple metal shapes in ways that make them look like a person.

We decided to be sculptors and make our very own sculptures using pipe cleaners. We  followed the instructions carefully to make our mannequins.

We all had so much fun in our art lesson.

Wonderful World of Dictionaries

19th May 2021Mrs Spencer

This morning in our English lesson, we confidently used the letters of the alphabet to locate new vocabulary and information in a dictionary. We had so much fun seeing who could find the words first! Well done Hawthorns!

Volcano Painting

7th January 2020Mrs Spencer

As part of our Volcanoes and Earthquakes Geography topic the children spent the afternoon working in pairs to paint their paper mache volcanoes.  They studied photographs of real life volcanoes and used their knowledge of the subject and their Art skills to paint their own volcanoes.

Volcano Afternoon!

4th December 2019Mrs Spencer

As part of our Geography topic ‘What makes the Earth angry?’ we invited our families in for an afternoon of D.T.  We made volcanoes by attaching masking tape to half a bottle and base; making the volcano shape.  We then used paper mache to cover the structure and build up the crater.  Year 3 had a brilliant afternoon!  We then finished off our afternoon by solving a range of Maths problem solving activities.  We can’t wait to paint then explode our volcanoes.
