This week we have been reading the story of ‘Rosie Revere, Engineer’ in literacy. Our STEM challenge was to design and build something that Rosie could travel in down a zipwire. We had to make sure that a) Rosie stayed in her ‘vehicle’ all the way and b) that our design had to travel independently down the zipwire. We had great fun testing out our ideas!

This morning in our English lesson, we confidently used the letters of the alphabet to locate new vocabulary and information in a dictionary. We had so much fun seeing who could find the words first! Well done Hawthorns!

In Acorns we have been exploring pirates by following and making maps, designing and making pirate ships, and reading books about the sea. Have a look at some of our adventures!

Working together to build our ships

A pirate treasure chest

“I see no ships!”

“Land ahoy!”

A mysterious message (and map!) in a bottle

Testing our pirate ships to see if they float and are waterproof

Will it float?

We worked hard to design our ships and then improve them to make sure they would work properly
The topic for this term is Animal Adventures and the theme for last two weeks has been Mad About Minibeasts. The class story that we have been reading is The Very Lazy Ladybird. We have explored this book using colourful semantics to create sentences and used pictures from the book to sequence the story. In maths we have completed lots of ladybird counting activities and we have related the number of dots to numerals. We have also made ladybirds using 2D shapes. In science we have labelled a ladybird, sorted insects into categories of legs and no legs. In art we have created a ladybird collage with a stained glass effect. In geography we have been learning about people who help us and who we would need in certain situations. We have also been learning how to sign these jobs using Makaton.
Watch out Marks and Spencer’s and Aldi’s, there’s a new caterpillar in town! Meet Keith!
As part of our Minibeast topic, the children made their own caterpillar cake. They listened and followed instructions and happily took turns. We had great fun making Keith the caterpillar!

Fantastic work Lemons!
In English we have been using freeze framing to infer different character’s thoughts and feelings from How to Train your Dragon. The children were fantastic at acting out the 4 key scenes – they really thought about the character’s emotions and what their facial expressions and gestures would be. We are using this to write a diary from the perspective of Hiccup and Toothless. Super acting Chestnuts!
